Anyone not using a glider?

My husband swears up and down I won't be comfortable breastfeeding LO using my Snoogle and/or a Boppy and that we should look into a glider. I keep telling him as long as I'm in the bed or on the couch and using the pillows, I should be OK. Plus, I don't want to spend money on something that will only be used for a short period of time.

Can anyone out there help end this debate PLEASE?!

Re: Anyone not using a glider?

  • You'll be fine.  I had an old rocker/recliner for DS and I loved it b/c it was in his room and well, rocking a baby to sleep only lasts so long until they grow up.  I often bf'd in the living room too and the couch was just as comfy for me.  I found the bed not so comfortable and side-lying position didn't really work for us.

That said, DH got me a new glider that is awesome for this baby.  Maybe it is b/c I've got a belly full of baby, but man does it feel amazing and I can't wait to use it with LO.

  • Only you know where you will be comfortable.  I have my great grandmothers rocking chair in my nursery. Will I use it?  Probably not,  pretty much just there for show,  I plan on using the recliner, couch, or bed.  You can always buy one later if you find that you have a need for it...

  • I'm not using a glider. I didn't want to waste the money on something that may not be needed. I'd suggest trying it your way since you're the one that will being doing the work...and if you change your mind then look into getting one.

  • im not getting one. all my friends that have had kids said they never used thiers.
  • We are not. If baby needs to be swayed in a seat, I can use my office chair. Our house is small and I didn't want to give up the space or spend the money.

You can assure your DH that while gliders may be a popular "rich western world" piece of furniture, babies all over the world nowadays and throughout time have managed just fine without a special chair.

This. I already feel i am buying way too much for LO dont want to feel i wasted even more money on something I may not really use, so I am waiting till after LO is born to see if I feel the need for one.

  • I am not using one.  We don't have the room for one.  I will just use our rocker/recliner or the couch.  If that doesn't work, then we will look into a glider.

  • We did not buy one and I regretted it. I thought I would never use it and it would be a waste of money. I found it very had to nurse in bed. I then had to move her from her room to the living room then back to the nursery a hassle at 3 am. My mom gave me her rocker and I loved it after I got it. I would see how you do with out one and if you do fine that's great if not then get one.
  • We invested in a recliner that can rock and it was the best thing ever. It fits in with our living room furniture so we can use it for years to come. I think I would have gone insane without something to rock DS in because it is a lifesaver when he is teething or has a tummyache, which seems to happen quite a bit in that first year. I agree that a glider is a waste of money because it's not exactly something that would fit in your living room once baby is older.

If you don't want to spend the money, I'd check consignment shops/goodwill/craigslist ads/yard sales for a chair that can rock. It doesn't necessarily have to be a glider. Even if you got an old style wooden rocking chair and got a nice cushion for it, it would probably do the job for a lot less money than a glider.

  • We got one as a gift from  my parents.  We were able to pick it out, however, and we found a brown leather glider recliner at Costco that will totally fit into another area of the house once we don't need it in the nursery.  It's a little large for the nursery, but it will work.
  • We have a rocker/recliner in the nursery that friends gave to us when our daughter was born. As long as you have the Boppy, you will be golden. I loved that thing and used it everywhere...couch, chair, recliner, didn't matter.
  • We don't have one and I don't know anyone IRL that has one. I only see them in nurseries online. Like PP said, you know what you'll be comfortable in and if you do find that you need one, you can always buy it.
  • I do not have a glider in the babies room. We have a recliner in the living room as part of our furniture. I don't even think there is enough room in babies room for a glider. I also have another child so I don't think I'll be able to just sit in there and rock baby.

  • we have a very small house & are inundated with "hand-me-down" furniture from my parents, in-laws, and my grandmother. we'll be using either the bed, couches, a rocker, or another chair....i didn't see the point in adding to our collection, so no glider here!

  • We absolutely don't have the room or the money so we'll be skipping the glider/rocker. We do have a huge overstuffed leather chair and two recliners so hopefully that will suffice.

  • I didn't get a glider the first time because I thought our two rocker/recliners would suffice.  Well, I found that it's hard to get out of a rocker recliner while holding a baby because it rocks backward, not just back.  We didn't get rid of the recliners, but I now have two gliders as well (bought both second hand in excellent condition).  One glider is in our room, the other in the nursery.

  • We have a small place, there is barely enough room for the furniture we already have. Besides, I have read that you are better off getting a baby sling and just toting the baby around as you do chores, just as effective and a bit of a workout as well.

  • Thanks ladies!

Very interesting answers...we have a two BR apartment and definitely don't have the room for one so that's another big reason why I don't want to get one. But like everything else left over for LO, I'll see how it goes and then buy stuff we need.
