Babies: 0 - 3 Months

STTN and Milk Supply

Hey ladies,

Recently C has taken to sleeping from about 10-7, which is great (if it lasts)... and I've been waking up around 3-4 (the time she used to wake up to eat) to pump...  I've been seriously considering dropping the pumping session to get more sleep, but am afraid it'll jeapordize my milk supply...

Any advice on this from moms that are EBFing?

  • My DD sleeps from 8 pm until 6 am, and I have been getting up around 2-3 am to pump... almost the same situation as you.  I am trying to keep the freezer stash up for work, however, so I need to continue my middle of the night pump sessions. Are you or planning to go back to work? You might want to keep it up so you'll have a supply for DC/babysitter.
  • I'll be going back to class (working on my Masters/being a SAHM) in January, so I'll need to leave several times a week.  But I was also thinking that I would be able to pump in place of that feeding as well.

I guess I'm also curious to know how much extra store other moms are accumulating before they stop pumping at night...  For example I have about 50-60oz stashed in the freezer right now...

  • I have probably a two week DC stash in my deep freeze (approx.120 oz)... but I will never stop pumping at night because I am obessive-compulsive BF mom and want E to have BM for as long as I possibly stretch it out, espeically since I have seen how her belly reacts to formula. I am lucky to pump enough at work to make the difference of what E ate at DC that day, also, so that night time pump is essential.

Since you will only be gone a few days a week, then I would think 50-60 oz would be a good start.

  • I don't pump at night anymore, but my baby is a little older than yours. At 6 weeks, I was still nursing in the middle of the night.

I would try to keep it up a couple more weeks until your milk supply get established and then drop it.

  • Thanks ladies!

I will prob continue to get up during the night until she hits about 3-4 months, that way I can build up a nice store and will feel more comfortable when handling future growth spurts... Just needed to hear that other moms were waking up even when LO wasn't! I kinda felt crazy there for a little bit.

I pumped during the night up till her 4-month-wakeful, when she would wake up to eat.

Now that she is STTN, I am considering pumping in the night again because she is eating like a pig, my freezer stash has been cut in half and my supply has decreased due to not enough pumping.

This scares me. I've been looking into donating, but I'm afraid of this happening. My freezer overfloweth.

K Nikki, it won't let me quote (keeps crapping out ugh!). I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you! I am jealous of your freezer stash, though. Mine was kick-ass until her 4 month wakeful hit. I have a decent amount, but def. not enough to keep me out of a state of near-panic. DH wants to constantly give "extra" milk to his mother to keep at her house and I might just box his ears. He doesn't get it. Not to mention Lily rarely nurses now except when she is tired. She'll nurse for 3 minutes, pull off, and then just grin and talk to me. Eat, child!!!
What is it about H's? Mine wants me to drop a pumping session because I'm taking up too much space in the freezer. Um, it doesn't work that way buddy. You'd best be gettin' to Lowes to buy a deep freezer.

So what do you end up doing when she doesn't want to nurse? Solids? Bottle feed? How many ozs does she take a day now? Sorry for all the questions. :(
