Rice cereal questions

I got LO some rice cereal and was planning to start it this weekend. He'll be 4 months on Friday. Is it too soon? When did you start and how did it go? He sits up in the bumbo pretty well and seems to be hungrier lately.

Re: Rice cereal questions

  • After MUCH contemplation- I skipped it and started with avocado instead.  Pedi said I could have started it though so I am sure it's fine age wise.  LO loves to eat now!

  • My pedi said to wait until six months, but there's a lot of differing opinions about when to start solids.  If your LO is showing signs of being ready, it's probably okay.  Although, I think when we start, I'm going to skip rice cereal and start with a veggie.

  • What does your ped say?

If your LO is showing signs of readiness, I guess - this means sitting up, lack of tongue thrust reflex, and a variety of other signs. . . https://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/readyforsolids.htm this is a decent list.

Personally, we delay introduction of solids for a variety of reasons - and avoid purees altogether.  Works well for our kiddos.  We tried to push solids on DD at 4 months and she wasn't ready - everyone was miserable.  With DS, we just went by feel, introing after 6 months (despite massive reflux, the GI doc said he wasn't ready until *at least* 6 months).  Solids before 1 year are non-nutritive, really - they're for practice, not sustenance.  The majority of a kiddo's calories should come from breastmilk or formula.

  • We'll likely wait until 6 months as per our Pedi and stuff I've read.  We did the same with our first.  It could change if he shows very visible signs of being ready though.

  • Our baby will be starting rice cereal on Christmas day! She'll be five months on the 29th, but was given the go ahead by her pediatrician.  The pedi said babies need to be able to hold their heads up steadily, sit up in a high chair, have lost the tongue-thrust reflex, show interest in food, and be otherwise thriving.  She grabbed an apple out of my husband's hands (baby not pedi), and started munching on it - so I'd say she's interested! :)
