3rd Trimester

Hand Swelling and Carpal Tunnel

So I have had pregnancy induced carpal tunnel all along but it has really gotten bad along with increased hand swelling. My doctor suggested sleeping in the brace for Carpal Tunnel but I am not sure it is helping. How have all of you dealt with swollen, numb hands? He even suggested possible steroid shots in my wrists if there was no improvement.

On a separate note...could this increased sudden swelling be Pre-E symptom? My BP is very low and no protein in urine so I would think not BUT seriously this is nuts...my hand look like a blown up balloon.

  • Cruelsound--my BP has been 110/70 this whole pregnancy ...did yours just shoot up out of nowhere?

  • I had horrible swelling, and horrible carpal tunnel with my last pregnancy.  I wore wrist braces on both wrists every night for my entire 3rd tri, and for about a month PP.  The cankles were crazy as well.

I was no actually diagnosed with Pre-E ... but at 37 weeks, my OB told me that if I wasn't induced soon I would be.  I was induced at 37 week 5 days after 3 days of CRAZY high blood pressure.

  • Same problem here. My right wrist and thumb hurts like hell, I can't even type properly, let alone change the tv channel!! Its been that way for the past 3 weeks now.

I have been wearing the wrist brace every night, and I pull it off every now and then because it gets really hot and stuffed up. There is really no cure for pregnancy carpal tunnel except for steroid shots.

The two things that worked for me every night to relieve a little bit of pain:

    1) Put ice pack on your wrist for 5 minutes on, 5 minutes off for about 4 times

    2) Do some wrist exercise
