Moms who worked out during pregnancy

I am 28+ weeks and am still doing the eliptical 2-3 times a week, not letting my heartrate go above 150.   Recently, a few people have told me that people who work out during pregnancy end up going early/premature.  I do not want to deliver early.  Ive just getting a little nervous about this.  Anyone know if there is a link between working out in pregnancy and pre-mature labor?

Thanks!

  • I've never heard that.

I did high impact step aerobics until 35 weeks and then water aerobics until 39 weeks.

  • I worked out, and pretty hard too. In some of my workouts heart rate was up to 180-190. I worked out until 37 weeks. I went two days past due date. Working out really helped me during delivery. 18 hours of labour, I went with no pain meds, and I'm sure working out helped a lot. Also lost 22 out of 24lbs I gained within the first week. Not sure if it had anything to do with working out or not.

  • I worked out just like you described and was induced at 41 weeks and 4 days because I was going to be too late. Had a very successful induction and delivered a beautiful baby girl. I wouldn't worry - it's a total crap shoot!

Your welcome. I think working out is the best thing you can do. After delivery every muscle in my body was so sore. Towards the end though I slowed down and worked out whenever I felt I had the energy and rest when I needed it. It gets hard after about 34 weeks or so. GL!
  • I worked out a couple days a week right up to the end (was at the gym the night I went into labour) and was 3 days past my due date.  My workouts were a combo of cardio (usually spin bike) and weights.

  • I've never heard that. I worked out right up until I delivered at a pretty good intensity (HR well over 150 at times) and had a perfectly healthy full-term baby. Make sure you drink lots of water, dehydration can cause contractions.

  • Just make sure you don't do any abdominal exercises involving you lying on your back.  This was the only recommendation from my OB.
  • That's a load of BS.  I worked out during pregnancy (swimming, biking, running and weights) and had to be induced at a week late.  I delivered a very healthy 8lb8oz. baby.

It's also BS that your heartrate needs to stay under 150 or 140.  When I worked out I also didn't pay close attention to my heartrate.  I just didn't let myself get too winded or overheated.  That's what my MW said, just don't get overheated or to the point where you're sucking air and everything will be fine.

  • I worked out 5 - 6 times/week (heart rate to 140/150) until 31w.  From then until I was induced at 41w, I walked and/or cycled probably 5 times/week.  Definitely did not go early.

  • I don't think that's an accurate stat. I ran throughout my pregnancy, including a 5K at 36 weeks. I delivered at 40w3d. Late in my pregnancy I posted a poll on the Health & Exercise board asking when folks who worked out delivered, and there seemed to be no identifiable trend. Your body will deliver when it wants.I don't think working out has an effect (unless you're working out WAY harder than you should be.)

  • I worked out 3-4 times a week until 3rd tri, then cut back. I  had my baby early but that was probably because my cervix was a little shorter than average, not the exercise. (My doctors monitored it but didn't think it was a problem so I wasn't given any restrictions. Ooops.)
