Infertility

Would you take my eggs?

I've wanted to do this since I was 19.  I'm not sure why I always had such a strong desire to do so--it has just always been on my "to do" list.

Anyways, I'm on prozac for depression (IF doesn't exactly make me happy....) and it pretty much disqualifies me from all programs. I was accepted into a clinic back in Idaho even with the medication because the coordinator said that while my chances of being picked were slim, it wouldn't hurt to try.

For those of you looking for donors, is this a complete no go for you?  Would you toss me out of the pile right away?  I don't want to waste my time on doing the paperwork, etc. for it if nobody will ever pick me, but at the same time, why would I have such a strong draw to help another couple?  Even before we were diagnosed?

You can be honest!  What did you look for?  What were your first qualifiers/disqualifiers?

Re: Would you take my eggs?

  • When I was choosing donors a past history of depression was taken into account in my case.  My Grandmother and Brother are both Bipolar and suffer from Manic Depression and it has taken a huge toll on our family and the relationships that I have with them, so if I was choosing a donor with depression history, I would want to know when they were diagnosed and how severe the diagnosis was.  If your depression was brought on mostly by IF, then I would totally understand that and I would consider you as a donor.  I think it is a very personal choice.

And I think it is extremely great that you want to help others with IF and I don't blame you for trying especially with such a strong draw to it.  Good Luck in your choice.

  • I have depression.  A history of mental illness at all would be enough for me to disqualify a person.  The way I think about it, if I was putting all the time, effort, and money for DE I would want as clean of a medical history as I could-including cancer, autoimmune disorders, alcoholism, etc.  I've seen the family connection in my family.

But, still I choose to have my own children, so it doesn't bother me THAT much, but I don't know if I would pay for DEs with that history.

I would love to be a egg donor as well-but I also know NOBODY would want my eggs.  I'd love to be a surrogate for a gay couple we know-but I can't do that until I am pregnant myself!

  • We didn't use DE but we did use DS and we didn't care at all if any family member had a history of depression. Honestly I don't even recall if I looked at that for any of our donors. I find it a little amusing that you would be disqualified from programs due to depression when most people go through bouts of depression in their life and use medication at some point. To me there is a huge difference between someone dealing with situational depression and being chronicly depressed, bipolar, manic, etc. If we didn't place such a stigma on the use of antidepressants in our society that people felt the need to hide it, I think people would be amazed at the percentage of people who have been on an antidepressant at some point or another. If I was going to disqualify a donor I would want to know why they were on an antidepressant, because I think that weighs much more heavily than the fact that they are on them.
