  • If you've been watching your calorie intake so closely and are conscious of how you eat, you're doing just fine. Now is not the time to worry about weight gain. It could be water weight too if it's overnight like that. Do you feel like you've gained too much so far this pregnancy or something?

  • Baby is growing- you need to gain weight. 3lbs overnight is just your body's way taking what baby needs. Make sure you're taking in what you need to or your body will retaliate and start stock piling on the weight as a defense mechanism- similar to how people who go on crash diets find that they actually put on weight.

  • I agree with luvdv8 - if you are overdoing the whole counting calories thing you may not be getting as much as you actually need and your body is fighting back by stockpiling.  Could also very easily just be bloated.  Be prepared to see your weight fluxuate sometimes up to 5 pounds here and there on random days.  Pregnancy does that to you.

If you're eating a healthy balanced diet and getting enough calories (about 300 more per day than you would consume normally while pregnant) then stop agonizing about the scale.  It's not about you anymore until after the baby comes out and even then it's still not about you right away.  If you gain too fast or too much then your doctor will tell you.  Until then try not to worry about it :)

  • I didn't think about water weight. That very well could be.

  • You are probably just retaining water.

You shouldn't be weighing yourself every day, as weight can fluctuate so much particularly during pregnancy.

Weigh yourself once a week or twice a week at the exact same time (preferably in the morning after you use the bathroom but before you eat).

That is the only way to truly monitor your actual weight.

Can you tell I was a perpetual dieter?  :)

  • I am sure that you did not gain 3lbs overnight. You probably ate too much salt yesterday and your body is retaining extra water.

  • 1. Get off the scale.

    2. Take a poop.

    3. Your pregnant.

You do not need to weigh every day. Even people that are trying to LOSE weight are advised not to get on the scale but once a week. No more complaints about weight unless your doctor tells you to slow it down.

  • I'm gonna go with retaining water too. I got in trouble at my last appointment for gaining 9 lbs in a month and two days after my appointment i had lost 5 of it.... I am chalking it up to water retention. Now I do weigh myself every morning and it can jump by as much as 5 lbs overnight sometimes. I am telling myself not to stress as long as i continue to eat healthy (I dont eat fried food, fast food or sweets at all) and that i am pregnant and going to gain weight. (Just not 9 lbs in a month again i hope!) Don't stress about it. As long as you are not eating a super sized big mac meal three or four times a day you are probly doing just fine.

  • 3 whole lbs overnight=bloat! Did you eat a lot of sodium yesterday? Sodium kills me on the scale, esp when pg. Whenever I take afew days to watch my sodium, the scale drops a few lbs easily.

  • maybe you just need to take a poop. i hope for your sake it's not 3 lbs. but joking aside, my weight sort of goes up and down by a few pounds every couple of days and then the scale starts showing something more reasonable. sounds like you're being careful about your weight so don't stress :)

This. But I would say weigh yourself once a week at MOST , maybe once every 2 weeks would be good.

I agree. If you know what you weighed last night vs. this morning it means that you are weighing yourself way too much. In pregnancy (and in life in general) the number on a scale is not a sole indicator of health. Frequent weighing just doesn't make sense as part of a greater healthy lifestyle. Instead eat wisely, be active,  and talk to your doctor about your concerns.

  • Don't ever weigh yourself until AFTER you poop!

  • It takes consumption of 3500 calories *in addition to* what you normally eat & burn off to gain a pound of fat.  Did you eat 10,500 extra calories that you didn't burn while you were sleeping last night?

Most likely it is water weight or bloating from too much sodium.  A few weeks ago, I had a couple of heavy meals back-to-back and, as a result, my scale told me that I'd gained 4 lbs. in two days.  Totally unrealistic and I could tell I was bloated so I didn't stress it.  Sure enough, after I went back to my normal eating for a few days the scale was normal again.

I also agree with only weighing yourself once or twice a week.  I go to the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I weigh myself on the gym scale then.  Outside of that, I don't step on a scale.
