Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Refuses to hold own bottle.

Anyone else have LOs who refuse to hold their own bottles or sippy cups?  DS can do it.  He just doesn't like to.  I have tried multiple sippy cups and he refuses to hold them.  He will drink out of them if I hold them, but won't help himself.  What age does this normally happen?  TIA

Re: Refuses to hold own bottle.

  • My DD refused to hold a bottle and she didn't really get into the swing of drinking from a sippy until around 14 months. . . so that's when she started holding it regularly.

  • Thanks.  I was beginning to think DS was the only LO who didn't hold his own bottle.  I enjoy the cuddle time with him, but it would be nice when we were in the car.
  • DD didn't hold her own bottle until around 7.5 months-ish.  She could, but as soon as you'd let go of the bottle, she'd throw her arms back so fast!  It will happen eventually, just enjoy the snuggles for now!

  • DD will not hold her own bottle either. She can, she just does not want to. For her sippy cup she finally just started. We tried other brands, now we use a Nuk one, the handles are the opposite way of other sippy cups and it has a soft spout. She really likes her sippy cup now.
  • DS still refuses, and he's almost 9 months.  He knows how, he just won't.  It's getting a little frustrating because he's turning into a hyper wiggleworm during every feeding.

I have tried a few different types of sippy cups, but I will have to try the nuk.  Thanks.

  • DD also refuses to hold her own bottle. When I give her the sippy cup though she goes right for the handles so at least she holds that but the only problem is that she doesnt tip it up enough to get anything out of it so I still have to help her out but she will get the hang of it soon i'm sure! I use the nuby sippy cup and she likes it. I just introduced it about a week ago and she can take a few sips out of it so it keeps getting better. Hopefully she will start holding her bottle soon though!

    Same here.

Also DS has no interest at all in holding his own bottle.

  • Yup.. Dylan refuses to hold his own bottle.. occasionally, he will put his hands on there.. but it's definitely not to hold it.. my pedi told me not to even worry about teaching him b/c it's easier to get rid of the bottle when it's time if they've never held it.. (that's what she said-- who knows if it's true)

And Sippy cup, He will hold it, but only if it has handles... without handles, no way!
