We go every other year, but never had kids. We have a timeshare so we stay at the same place Marriot Grande Vista, it is about 20 min from Disney. On International Drive which is 5 min from Sea World. I guess I would say there are not as many kids here as there is at a Theme Hotel very close to the park.
We cant wait for the Boys to be old enough to go and enjoy it, we plan on continuing to stay at the Marriott, has 4 swimming pools and one Kids pool with the sprinklers and water guns. They have alot of kids activities, restaurants, store, bars.
We went when I was 23w pg (we had planned the trip long in advance of getting pg) with BIL and his family. They have a time-share so we stayed in a condo. We had a great time, though I do recommend that if it's your first time ever like it was for me, go when you're not pregnant, so you can actually ride the rides. Though the plus side was since I needed a wheelchair (no way would all that walking and standing in long lines in Sept FL heat have been good for me at that point!) we got to go to the front of lines to some events. My nephew and nieces loved that.
We've taken DS 5x (IL's are Disney Vacation Club Members), so I'd love to answer any questions. We stay in the 3 bedroom villas on property- there were 12 of us last time and also 4 kiddos under 3 last time. The 3 best places we've stayed IMO are;
Beach Club- lots to do on the boardwalk for LOs so you don't have to go into parks, good variety of places to eat within a super short walk, walking distance to Hollywood studios & epcot
Animal Kingdom Lodge- we got a Savannah view and it was great to drink coffee watching giraffes and elephants off of our patio, lots of kid friendly activities at the resort.
Saratoga Springs- great pool for LOs (they can "walk in" to shallow water), little splash park for kids, short walk to Downtown Disney (Big shopping & restaurant area)
DH and I LOVE Disney World. We've stayed at different resorts the last few times we've gone. Planning a trip there really depends on how much you're going to spend, time of year, etc. Here is a link to my most favorite Disney World trip planning website.
We live 3 hours from Disney and we go once or twice year. The hotels inside Disney are gorgeous but pricey, but they do allow you, because you're a guest at their hotel, to enter the park 30 minutes before it opens. I highly suggest getting a hotel anywhere round or on University Drive, which is 10-15 minutes drive to both Disney or Universal Studios. (most hotels provides a shuttle bus).
Secondly, I also highly suggest getting the Park Hopper, which allows you to return to disney and hit all the parks during your stay, you'll also save so much more money by getting that pass.
Lastly, visit the disney site to look for any promotions or deals that may be going on right now. If you guys are going for the holidays, the parade and decorations are beautiful!!

We went in Nov. and stayed at the Carribbean Beach Resort. We flew there, so staying on site and using their transportation was nice. We booked through AAA and saved over $1000 rather than trying to do it myself.

We went in April. My parent's own a time share, so we didn't need to pay anything for the place. It was about 15 minutes outside of Disney on International Drive. We did not do the park hopper passes with a 4, 2, and 1 year old (my nephew) it was way too much going back and forth. Instead we did like 5 days which allowed us to do Magic Kingdom two times. Next time we go, we plan to stay in Disney. Some nights the parks stay open longer and open earlier for those who stay. Also, the shuttle would have saved us a lot of time and headaches! The parking was horrible regarding how much time it took to get there. We plan to return in about two years. I have heard that going over October is a great time too. As children, my grandparents would take us down every other Christmas for two weeks. I loved the parade at that time and remember it as one of the best things in my childhood!!

We are DVC members and go ever year! We love it!
I can't imagine staying outside of "disney" itself. They make it so easy to get around. Our favorite resorts are Saratoga, Coronado, and Port Orleans!
