I know it sounds bad, but don't tell them until about a month before you are due unless you want to hear, "Is the baby coming today?" Every day for the next 7 months! Our little ones get excited each time a new one arrives, but we don't talk about it much until about a month before the due date. We set up the bassinet, and have books about mommy having a baby and how they will have a brother or sister, and take the clothes out of the attic. They love to help, even the youngest. But once you start talking about it, that is all they talk about "there is a baby in your belly!" it's so cute
In our case (don't know if this is normal) Drew is young enough that he is pretty oblivious. We'll talk about his brother or sister and we'll point to my stomach and say the new baby is coming. He just kinda smiles and sometimes touches my stomach (if that's what we're pointing to) but I don't think any of it means anything. It doesn't bother me though. We talk to him about lots of stuff that he doesn't understand yet (colors, animals, Christmas). In some ways, I think it's easier that he's so young.
He'll be about 20 months when #2 arrives. I don't know how much he'll "get it" until LO actually comes home.
