I'm 5'5", 125 pounds, wearing a size 4 in most brands. I thought my belly would be flatter by this point. So is this just extra skin, or do I just need to lose more, get toned? It doesn't seem (to me) that it's changed a whole lot from when I started to lose weight. I'm afraid to keep losing and becoming obsessive, always feeling like I need to lose more.
It may not seem that bad, but I just really would've thought that by the number on the scale and the number on my jeans, that my tummy would've been flatter. Sorry for the semi-inappropriate attire, getting ready to head to the Y with the boys while DS1's at preschool.
ETA: I'm generally happy with how I look, but I'd love to feel confident enough to wear a bikini (even though I probably never would), I'm not there yet, but I'd love to have the option at some point.
Re: So is this "twin skin" or just more fat to lose/tone? PIP
Honestly, you look great to me!
ETA: And I don't see any twin skin, unless it doesn't show up well in the picture. Your skin looks perfect. You have the tiniest of pooches--which is totally normal and healthy for a woman to have--but honestly, I'd be thrilled to look like you.
Uh yeah...this!
I don't know either, but I think I'm in a very similar situation. I'm 5'4, weigh about 125 right now and am in size 4. I feel like I look like my pre-pregnancy self everywhere except I still have a little extra something going on in the stomach... I'm hoping that I can start to work out more soon to get rid of it! I'm kind of scared it will never look the same and I'll never wear a bikini again.
You look great though!
this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish i looked like that PP!!!!!
but in all honesty i consider twin skin just that... skin i think it would be all stretched out. That looks like it could just be stretch abdominal muscles and a tiny TINY bit of fat!
I am by NO means nearly as hot as you but i have noticed i have more of a pot belly than before and i spoke to my ob he said especially with twins the lining that coveres tha ab muscles will stretch and that will not go back to pre baby days. you can work your muscles all you want but that lining will not go back. sorry prob not what you wanted to hear!
This.
I have twin skin and I promise you, if you have it you don't need to ask if you have it. My lower abdomen, just above my bikini line, lookes like wrinkled pantyhose. That is twin skin.

seriously- you either have serious body image issues- or you are being an AW - b/c there is no fat there to be seen- certainly not "twin skin" anywhere in that pic...
i hope you are just being an AW b/c it makes me sad when thin women have body issues making them think that a body like that pic has something wrong with it.
I think you look fantastic!
Wyatt "Baby A" 6lbs13ozs 19in.
Grayden "Baby B" 6lbs8ozs 20in.
If I had the guts, I would PIP my abdomen to give you an idea of what she means by "wrinkled up pantyhose." I think you look great!
your body created TWO children at once - women's bodies are not made to do that... so cut yourself some (no... a LOT) of slack! None of us will look 16 again, even if we didn't have babies at all... that's the beauty of aging
I'm close to 40 (will be 38 this Feb) and have realized that I'll never look like i did in my 20's... but i"m OK with it. I have done some pretty amazing stuff with this body - and i think it looks pretty good considering... and I have some really gross flappy twin skin that requires a tummy tuck to get rid of (the more weight i lose the grosser it looks actually).
You look fantastic and I would guess that 99.99% of the women on this board (or any mommy board for that matter) would LOVE to have your body. You should be really happy with it - seriously - i'm not trying to be snarky - i just hate to see women upset with their bodies - at any stage... but esp one that looks as good as yours does AFTER having TWINS! it's an amazing thing that belly did - and even more amazing that it looks like it does now without surgery!
Before I read Goldie's post I was going to ask if you were kidding.
I had twin skin even with my singleton!! I am happy now that after this pregnancy I can really call it twin skin.
Ouch Goldie, that was a bit harsh. I get that we all sacrifice our bodies to create the miracle of life and that our bodies went above and beyond because we carried two (or more babies), but I think it's okay to have your confidence be shaken by the changes that occurred.
I don't have body image issues (or at least I didn't before I got pregnant) and I'm terrified of what I'll look like when this is all said and done. I won't lie, I've cried over it several times during this last trimester. Sure, my kids are worth it. But I'm 31 - I would like to feel good about myself, rock a bikini and feel sexy again. Just b/c we're mommies doesn't mean we have to give that up, right?

To the OP - I think you look fantastic. It gives me hope that I can get back to something resembling my shape before this pregnancy. I "see" what you're referring to that would be different than pre-pg stomach flatness. Part of me thinks that with a little more time and ab training you can recoup a bit more of your old shape. Not necessarily losing weight, but tightening your core. I will tell you that I wouldn't be disappointed in my progress if that was me in a year
question for you - did your skin break (i.e. stretch marks) during your pregnancy? You can't tell if it did. Mine broke at almost 33 weeks. They're just white and shiny. I cried for a while that day. Since then they've gotten progressively worse, but are still the white ones. My H keeps on telling me that once there's no babies in my belly and I have a tan you won't be able to see them. He's a nice liar. But seriously, how did you fair and (if you did get stretch marks) how are they looking a year out?
Oh honey, the amount of money I would pay to have your body....
I was a size 6 pre-preg 135lbs. So, yes, you look better now that I did pre-pregnancy. Oh the jealousy!
4 Fresh IVF cycles + 1 FET where embies didn't survive the thaw = 2 perfect little men!
sFET 11/9/11 - Beta 11/18 BFP!
I did get a few stretchies, but was pretty lucky. With DS1, I surprisingly didn't get any, and with the twins I had 1 tiny 1 that was around an inch for about a month, then I got a few more. They're still quite noticeable (which I'm really not self-conscious about AT ALL because I know there's nothing I can do to make them go away any faster), but they're definitely getting better. Right after delivery, they looked pretty gross, but that's the perk of having babies in the middle of winter.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone, that wasn't my intent at all. It's just kind of hard when a lot of friend/family (ok, some friends/family) that still don't have kids have supermodel bodies, and I though I wouldn't change anything, my body is definitely proof that we've been blessed enough to have 3 wonderful boys. I just thought that if I could get to a certain size or a certain weight that the physical evidence would be gone. I guess I need to accept my body for what it is and what it's done and stop trying to make it perfect, I'm sure there would always be something that I could always find to change.
You're hanging out with the wrong people. :-) If you had complained to me about your "twin skin" at a Starbucks, I would love punched you on the arm and told you to get over yourself, and then I would have stood up and jiggled my jiggly belly at you, for effect. And then I probably would have ordered another caramel macchiato, because, you know, why the hell not.
Love it.
And, I agree with PP... I could do crunches all.day.long and eat lettuce three meals a day and I'd NEVER have the rock hard dancer abs, perky round boobs, and toned a$$ that I had when I was 16. Of course I never appreciated it back then. I just hated my "huge" (actually thin, nice, toned) thighs
Might sound harsh- but i would bet money that the majority of the women who read this post thought the same thing... and they either didn't reply b/c of it- or replied being nice, b/c they are just nice people.... I, on the other hand, am honest. I don't sugar coat things.
And while I don't think the OP meant to offend anyone- I know that there are many women on here who struggle with their weight and are truly overweight.... and seeing posts like this is hard for them. Not that Aussie doesn't have the right to feel "not perfect" like everyone does --- but I think she needs a reality check to realize how great she does look- and to learn to deal with the fact that she will never look 16 again... none of us will - and there's a good reason for that... we aren't 16, and we've carried multiple babies in our bodies.
You really do look fabulous!!!
I can relate to the confusion as to whether it is extra skin or fat. I was pretty small pre-pregnancy (i.e. never really had stomach fat to contend with), so I don't know if the flab that smooshes out over my jeans, or when I sit down, is just skin from all the stretching or if it is fat (and, does that mean I need to try to do more cardio, or yoga/pilates.)
I think it is always an adjustment when your body shifts into something that it wasn't before. Whether it's wider hips, ribcage, twinskin, stretchmarks, etc., it always takes some getting used to.
I would go through it again, 1,000 times over, for my boys. But, I'm still getting used to my body looking markedly different.
i see what the OP is talking about - her stomach still looks distended.
OP, it doesnt look like extra skin (which is good) or extra fat to me. It looks like your ab muscles are still sticking out for some reason. have you tried pilates? that is what my trainer suggested to me when i was complaining about the same thing (mine ended up going down over time - i HATE pilates, lol).
My mom "struggles with her weight and is truly overweight" and has numerous health problems because of it. She's 44, has Type II diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart problems due to her weight. I'm very critical of my weight and body because I know I'm more genetically predisposed to all of those problems if I become overweight. I see how much she's struggled her whole life and breaks my heart. I can never understand what it's like to be in her shoes, and I don't want to. If I never become overweight, I will obviously have a much, much lower chance of developing those conditions. Just another point I'm coming from.
I was thinking of renting a pilates video. I tried looking for a class at the Y, but there's no pilates class. I've never done it before, but I've heard that it's really good for your core. Thank you so much for your reply, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
My tummy looks almost the exact same except I have a lot of stretchmarks and some legit twin skin where Ollie's big head was!
I asked my OB about it and that's when they said that I have an umbilical hernia and abdominal separation... I'm a sz 4 125lbs, 5'4" (which is exactly what I was before I got pregnant). I think I look great standing but sitting or bending over is sheer torture as this flat tire thing just sags or pooches.
If I tighten my abs then it just looks like some extra skin. Be careful with the pilates- because that sort of exercise can actually set you back. My PT said to wait to do anything until my abs are back and if they don't come back I'll be getting surgery...
As for the previous posters, it's all relative.
GiGi, the OP is past a year PP - for how long do you need to wait until your abs "go back" completely?
I will say this - It was around the 14-month mark for me before I was able to fit into my skinny skinny jeans (i had them packed up - i never thought my hips would go back to that size).
It's interesting how long after birth our bodies keep changing!
Sorry people are making you feel bad for posting.
It's a twin thing. Your abs and your skin are stretched, and no amount of exercise will make them perfectly flat again. If you used to have perfect, flat abs, I can see how this would be irritating! Just because your stomach looks better than most people's who have never had kids doesn't mean you can't *** a little about it.
My abs looked like that at a year. They're slightly better 2+ years out, but I still have a funny-looking belly button, and some faded stretch marks.
WHAT??!! I'll show you distended!!!! (if I was brave enough to actually post a pic of myself on the internet).
4 Fresh IVF cycles + 1 FET where embies didn't survive the thaw = 2 perfect little men!
sFET 11/9/11 - Beta 11/18 BFP!
This. Exactly. I wish I had the guts.... though, if you really want to see twin skin, there are some images here: https://theshapeofamother.com/
That is the furtherest from "twin skin" I have ever seen!
To me twin skin is when you skin hangs, there is nothing hanging or lose there!
HA! My belly button's all jacked up. If you poke your finger straight in, there's no belly button there. It's actually sitting upside down now. It's the stangest thing.
You look great.
Also, I want to add that ever since you posted about the nutrition app that helped you lose your weight, I have been using it and in a little less than a month I have lost 6lbs. Yay! So thank you! I have about 13lbs to go to be at my goal of 125.
What's this nutrition app?

Isn't it the best app ever?!?!
Yes! I love it, it makes it soo easy!
