For those with a toddler?

My DS is 20 months old. He has had diarrhea all day today. Tonight when I went to change his diaper before bed his diarrhea was very dark hard to tell if it was black or brown. His bum cheeks were FLAMING red! I have never seen anything like it! He was screaming and shaking when I tried touching them with the wipes. I called the doctor immediately. They of course have not called me back yet. I have called twice now. He is in bed sleeping and seems to be fine other than when I touch his bum with the wipes. Has anyone had experience with this? I am hesitant to bring him to the ER because I feel like he will get better care at his doctors office tomorrow morning if it can hold out until then.

TIA. Sorry so long

  • Sounds like it could have been something he ate, and it's irritating his little bum when it comes out.

Probiotics in some apple sauce always seems to clear up DD's diarrhea. Maybe stick to some bland foods for the next day and see if it clears up.

Have you experienced the horrible pain though it seems he is in when I touch him with the wipes? I guess that's my big fear. He has had diarrhea before but never has he shaken from pain when I touched him with the wipes.

    Thanks for your input!

  • DD has had that twice--it's awful.  And after each episode, she would scream when it was time for a diaper change b/c she was terrified.  Honestly, each time I just put a super thick layer of Triple Paste on her afterwards, and w/in hours it was MUCH better.  It was probably just something he ate.  Try the BRAT diet in the morning plus yogurt.

  • I would guess it's just pain from the rash. And if you are using scented wipes, it probably does sting pretty bad.

There's a brand of really great spray diaper rash cream that I keep on hand for occasions like this. DD doesn't get very many rashes, but when she does, it always seems to really hurt her, and it's nice not to have to touch her to put on the cream.

Good luck, I hope it clears up quickly!

  • Wipes have alcohol in them - when they have severe diaper rash, it hurts!

My son just went through a nasty diarrhea phase for over a week.  I actually just stuck him in the shower when he would poop.  Spray him down with water, and not a problem.

I also have the California Baby diaper area wash - it comes in a spray bottle.  I would use that in the middle of the night, and wipe with toilet paper.

Also, use a thick diaper rash paste (triple paste, butt paste) to keep acidic poop off the skin.  Stop dairy for a few days (try soy or rice milk for a few days, no cheese) and try a probiotic to stop it - I put it in his juice.  It's expensive, but works like a CHARM!

  • I haven't read other suggestions so this may be a repeat

use cool wet paper towels for diaper changes....blot...don't scrape or wipe

he needs a barrier from the acid in his poop from getting on his skin.  slather on aquaphor or some kind of cream.  might want to try equal parts of aquaphor and maalox mixed then put on his butt.

you need to feed him some yogurt tomorrow so he can get that good bacteria in his digestive tract.

he might end up with a yeast infection on his butt so if his red butt doesn't go away by the morning, go to the dr anyway.

  • Use water to blot, like others have said. Stick him in a tepid bath as it will soothe the area. Also, don't use Aquaphor or any other petro based product. It wont allow the rash to breathe and will make it worse. This advice comes from my dermatologist Dad :) the best thing for a bad rash is exposure to air. Let him go naked for a bit tomorrow. That will help a lot. Good luck. He'll be back to himself in no time.

i just figure it will help block the acidic poop if he has it overnight.

A high zinc oxide cream is the best option to create a barrier. Desitin Overnight or Triple Paste are what I usually use.

  • Just have to second the notion that you need to avoid wipes. When DD had an extremely bad diaper rash as a newborn, we used wet wash clothes for days until it cleared up. For a while the doctor said not even to use wash clothes -- to just rinse her clean. Not sure if that's an option for you, but I'd try something other than a wipe.

  • My DS had something similar to this a few months ago. He was having really bad diapers for about a week. We couldn't figure out why. Nurse told me to put him on the BRAT diet for a few days. Once we did this we found out he is lactose intolerant and have since switched his milk. Also she told me to buy Calmoseptine for his bottom. It is a super diaper rash cream. It is normally kept behind the pharmacy counter and doesn't require a prescription. It is great and worked wonders on DS. His rash was gone within a couple of days.
