DS is two tomorrow! DD just turned 6 months and things are great. I wanted to share some items that have helped me survive the first 6 months (many will continue to help for a while!) I also have a DH who is gone a lot so I do it alone a lot and needed a lot of help.
I liked seeing posts like this when I was pregnant and terrified!
-A second crib. Some people can do without it, but I knew it would make sense for us to NOT transition DS to a toddler bed before DD was born. They are 18 months apart and though I didnt put DD in her crib to sleep until she was 4 months, I still think it was necessary.I also feel like if it aint broke, dont fix it. DS slept great in his crib when DD got here....I wasnt messing with that. Plus he will play in there in the morning and I know he is safe.
-My Summer Video monitor. I have the slim one that can scan up to four cameras. LOVE it. Makes my life easier and I love that I can hear them both at night without having to have two handhelds.
-sound machines..plural. I have 3. 2 in DDs room and 1 in DS's. DS yells my name LOUDLY in the morning, this way DD doesnt wake up. they are life savers.
-Fisher Price Rock n play sleeper. DD was a choker. She would choke a lot while eating and after. This is an inclined bassinet and when I finsihed burping her I laid her down right away and she would not choke and would fall asleep in this cozy little thing. It surrounds them like someone is holding them. She slept great in it, and I could rock her from my bed.
-my sling and Ergo. I have an ergo I used with DS when he was 7 months on. I bought the heart to heart insert for DD and didnt like it until she was 2 months old when her legs splayed open more. I used a sling with her in the belly to belly upright position for the first 2 months. Then I switched to the ergo. Its a guaranteed nap, even now. Its comfy and doesnt hurt me. I have two hands free and LOVE it. Worth its weight in gold. (I had a moby and hated tying it, this works better for me.)
-Double stroller. I have the BJ city select and love it, The carseat adapter was a must for me.
-Lots of wipes. I have them in several areas of the house with diapers tthere too. So I could change a baby when I watched the other one.
-babyproofing items. We did this before DD was born, but it was SO great when I would nurse and DS would be all over the place. We gated off our main room and he couldnt get into stuff while I wasnt able to get to him fast enough. For my peace of mind too, it was necessary to know he was safe-even if I have to leave him in the living room for a few minutes.
Lastly--our MINIVAN. Best. purchase. ever. Two words. Automatic doors. I can carry a toddler and carry the car seat while opening the doors, plop DD in her base and put DS in his seat easily. LOVE it. I was so against them, but I am glad DH talked me into it.
Hope that helps!
Re: items that helped me with 2u2
Great list! I totally agree with all of it - especially the second crib, double stroller, sound machines, and extra wipes.
We have 'diaper changing stations' in both kids rooms, as well as tucked away in the corner of the living room - its much more convenient that way. And boy, do we EVER go through wipes! Speaking of that, I need to buy another jumbo-sized box.
And I am totally envious of your minivan. I can't believe I just said that. Haha. But seriously, I want one SO bad, and my DH and friends think I'm joking.
Your list is perfect! The only thing we didn't do was the second crib, and I tell people it worked for us, but I know people it didn't work for, it really depends on the temperament of the child. and YES the automatic doors on the minivan are the best invention EVER... I never saw myself in a minivan, but I'm so glad we did it, I can't see us going on vacation in a smaller car.
I know its scary, but it will all be great.
You could always just use the pnp like a crib when you want to move LO out of your room. I was thinking of doing that, but found graco crib for 169, so we got it. Plus I wanted to girl up her room and get bedding etc.
GL you'll do great!

it scans each camera every 8 secs automatically. its great.
Totally awesome list! I agree with you 100%, if I made a list of items, mine would match yours.
Definitely got the 2nd crib, another sound machine for DS, love my City Select stroller and my minivan, love my baby carrier (makes it easy to hold DS close and still give DD the attention she needs), have the same monitor too although DS is still in my room in his bassinet at night but he sleeps in his room during the day so DD doesn't wake him.
I have gone through so many wipes too! It seems like I am always refilling in DS's room, DD's room, and I keep a stash in the living room too so I don't have to run from one room to another when someone needs changing.
I have this monitor and I've tested it out on scan. I don't remember a beep.
OP- thanks so much for your post!
Thanks! i am thinkinh about trying for # 2, DS is 7 months next week, but freaked that once it actually happens and second is here I will freak and wish I enjoed being a family of 3 longer...but totally feeling like its time to try.
This gave me hope
I also have a video monitor that can scan muiltiple cameras, it also has an app that you can watch on internet, i use it to check in on caregivers as well.
It is the mobi digital video monitor.
no it doesnt beep at all. Just switches on its own.
Thanks for the advice. I will have to get the rock in play sleeper, I had never even heard of it before.
I will say I did go ahead and move my 17 month old to a big bed because I really didn't want to spend the money on another crib and he did great. He is a wild crazy child, but did surprisingly well in the bed. I did a bunk set from ikea that has the bottom bunk on the floor so I didn't have to worry about him falling out. Just for those Moms that are scared to try moving the first child it could work.
