Extreme breastfeeding

Oh my... so my husband just sent me this video in an attempt to disturb me... and he succeeded.  It's about a mom who breastfeeds her daughters til ages 5 and 8+.

Let me note that I hope to BF my children for about a year each, but my personal opinion (feel free to disagree) is that while it's got tons of benefits, I think once a child is closer to growing boobs herself than to birth, it's definitely time to stop.  Don't mean to offend anyone that may be into this sort of thing, but it's definitely not my cup of ... tea!

Re: Extreme breastfeeding

  • I can't bring myself to watch the video. I really am not down with breastfeeding for that long.

Oh but you have to!  It's got some priceless nuggets that are forever singed into my retinas and ear drums.  Shall I say her girls give names to and draw pictures of her... other girls!

Well she brought that on herself, LOL

  • Just my opinion, that is extremely disturbing and once those girls get a little older it is going to be incredibly hard for them to look back at that experience and not shutter. I wonder if they will be able to breastfeed at all themselves. At least that would be how I felt if I were in their situation. Again just my opinion.

  • That should be considered sexual abuse or something.  Just WRONG!  I plan on breastfeeding for a year as well but that is just gross.
  • I have seen the full episode of this a long while back its crazy. One year is fine but beyond that Is not needed once my kid can ask for  juice etc the milk is done

Mmmm I don't know about that. BFing is not sexual at all!

Of course, I didn't watch the video, so what do I know?

I don't see why you care what another woman chooses to do with her body and her children. Enlighten me.

With all due respect, I similarly don't see why you care what another woman chooses to post on a website.  I believe I clearly stated that I don't mean to offend anyone who disagrees with me and that it's simply not my style.

Couldn't you say that about every single other thing ever put up on a message board?  Please feel free to enlighten me as to how that's different.

  • This reminds me of Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. Ever read it? Milkman anyone?

I heart breastfeeding kids who are in junior high.

Excellent.  So then there's no need for anyone to get their big girl panties in a twist. Yes

  • FFS I am so freaking sick of hearing about this stupid video.

FYI, my DD has been able to ask for milk since she was 6 months old.  There's no way I'd stop BF'ing then, the benefits continue long after 6 months.

The average age for women to wean their child worldwide is 4 years.  Our country is considered 'extreme" due to our lack of or short BF'ing time frame.  Some of us may think it's "gross", but you can bet that women in other countries look down on us for our lack of BF'ing.

Way to make yourself sound very ignorant.  Do you have any idea what a child who has been sexually abused goes through?  For you to compare late BF'ing with that horror is disgusting and just WRONG!

FWIW most children who are old enough to speak are not breastfeeding for dinner anymore.

I do somewhat agree with this. Infact looking into history 4 or 5 was about the age of weaning so that could be considered "natural." Where as us weaning so young can be considered "unnatural." However my daughter self weaned at one and that choice was fine with me.

I just try not to pass judgement.

But- Just for what it's worth, DD could sign for milk around 7 or 8 months, and could "ask" for it since the day she was born in her own way. I don't think that's a good way to judge how old is too old for bf'ing.

    Yup.

TBH, it's pretty egocentric to not acknowledge that we are the only country where this would be considered the extreme it is.  If it isn't your cup of tea, fine.  But your "it's time to stop" comment is where you do get offensive.  Who says it's time?  You?

Yes, I believe in my OP I wrote...

"I think once a child is closer to growing boobs herself than to birth, it's definitely time to stop"

..meaning this is simply my own personal, non-lactation-consulting, non-third-world-country-criticizing, just-living-in-a-country-where-I-can-express-my-thoughts opinion.  Everybody's got one, and that just happens to be mine.

ETA: I also stated that I did not mean to offend anyone and that I'm open to people disagreeing.

ETA again (sorry!): I only titled my post "Extreme Breastfeeding" because that's what this show was called, I realize the US ways are extreme in their own ways and I was a fan of the "Babies" documentary precisely for emphasizing that point.

I agree with this completely. My son has been able to ask for milk for quite some time now. I'm letting him self wean because I feel that's what right for us. I think he deserves to have as much of it as he'd like.

  •  Age 4 or 5 is different then 8 years old. I think BF is wonderful and I might until my child is 3 (which is late in the US)... but the fact that the womens body is not her own because her daughters are so attached to her breasts bothers me a little. I am a mother and I will love to give all I can to my child, but I am still my own person and this is MY body... not my child's.

Let me preface with this is MY OPINION... no need to jump all over each other for our opinions.

You do understand that infants get the majority of their nutrition from milk/formula for the first year of their lives?

This is exactly what I thought of.

Also, to PP who are saying that the average age to stop breastfeeding is 4-5 years in the rest of the world... have you ever considered the fact that a majority of countries in the world have much less money and access to food than people in the US? If I lived in a 3rd world country and couldn't afford food, you better believe I'd be breastfeeding for that long because it's FREE.

I plan on EBFing, but going until 8 years old? That's ridiculous.
