Parenting after 35

Close call last night

I was in the living room watching tv when I heard a thump in the nursery.  I turned on the monitor but it was not working.  DH suggested I go in to check on him so I peaked my head in and Matty was saying uh oh, uh oh.  He looked fine so I closed the door. Matty kept saying uh oh louder and louder so DH suggested I go in.

I went into the room to find Matt tangled in the power cord to the video monitor!  I was so horrified.  He reached the cord through the slats in the crib and got the end of the cord that was not secured to the wall. He had also pulled the plug out of the wall.  If he had not said uh oh or DH suggested I go in, I would have never known!

We moved his crib away from the wall so he could not reach it and tonight we have some major baby-proofing to do. Just when I think he is safe he can do something new.  I am going to take a fresh look at the house this weekend to see what might be the next hazard.

  • Oh my gosh. I'm glad that Matty is ok. I told my DH that this is something that we had to be careful about. Now I feel like I need to recheck the job we did just to make sure R can't reach the cord.

This. Uh oh has alerted me to a lot. Sooooo glad Matty's ok.
  • Thank God for the little smartie to know he did something wrong. I'm so glad you checked. Just when yu think you have the house baby-proofed, they do find something new to get into.

  • Glad he is ok! We had a specialist babyproof our house when Jason was about the same age. They come and first examine your house and make suggestions. It was quite expensive but worth it.

  • I hate all these things they can suddenly get in to, that I feel I can stare at for days looking for new dangers and it's not until she grabs for something or whatever that I "see" it!  So glad Matty is OK!
  • uh oh is right! glad he's OK!!

  • Oh my God. So glad he is OK. I would have totally panicked.

There is a guy in our area who does babyproofing. Like, that is his entire business. We had him come out to the house and tell us what we needed to do and we paid him to do some stuff. He pointed out things we never would have thought about. Even with that, Ada can find the most dangerous thing in a room in less than 5 seconds flat and then proceed with trying to kill herself with it. They're just kamikaze at this age!!

  • OMG...the exact same thing happened to us last weekend. I only realized something was not right because the video wasn't working and I knew from past exp with DD that it meant it was unplugged. He had it wrapped all around him. Very scary.

We had it secured to the wall up higher but not right at the bottom - I don't know why. But it is now and we moved the crib far enough away so he can't reach it anymore.
