Hi ladies! DS Is 2 wks old as of yesterday so I think I need to start pumping soon and give him his first bottle. I want a small stash in case I end up not being able to breastfeed for a week in the future for some medical reason. I've also seen some moms pump so that dad can do one feeding and that sounds great! How much do you pump and what for?
Re: Pumping for SAHM
I would pump 1 hour after I put my LO to bed. So, around 8pm. I had a HUGE oversupply with #2 and #3 and would pump 9oz. in 10 minutes. It was ridiculous. My stash was large.
The bad part? #2 and #3 refused all bottles, so all that pumped milk went to waste.
When did you first offer the bottle? It's confusing to read not to pump before four weeks or it will mess with your supply and not to offer bottles before four weeks or it will mess with breastfeeding... but at the same time you're told if LO doesn't have a bottle during week 3 or 4 you'll miss the window and they'll refuse it!
Week 2 with all 3 kids. Only DD#1 ever took a bottle.
I pump a few times a week after the first feeding of the day about get between 4-7oz. I have a little over 50oz in the freezer right now for when I'm away from the baby and for is my supply dries up, I'll be able to feed breast milk a little longer.
DD has only had the bottle about 3 times and did great each time, but I would wait to let dad do some of the feedings for quite a while. If you start pumping instead of feeding too early, it can affect your supply. I don't plan on pumping instead of feeding, only pumping in addition to feeding.
Another fyi about breast to bottle, my DS had his first bottle at about 2 weeks. He had one on occasion during the first two months without issue and then decided at three months that he wanted nothing to do with bottles.
I recommend giving a bottle daily - I've heard that even THAT doesn't guarantee that they won't suddenly decide to refuse, though.
I plan to use my saved bm for adding to veggies when we start solids.
