too little to drink?

my daughter is having a ton of GI problems.  she was allergic to something in breastmilk, so we went on nutramigen.  Which went well.  She spits up a ton, and is on a pretty good dose of prilosec as well.

The insurance covered alimentum so we switched.  things went down hill and she stopped gaining weight.  we went to the pedi GI, and he put her back on nutramigen.  he is doing a full week of stool tests to see if she is still passing blood and needs neocate. (we are in the middle of that, bringing to the dr tomorrow)

So now, how much formula is too LITTLE to drink?  She is about 10lbs.  she drinks 15-18 oz a day.  She was doing 28 on the alimentum but was spitting up about 10-12 oz a day.  So we just lowered the amount and she is now barely spitting up.

Is 15-18oz too little?  She is less cranky and not as spitty, so I am thinking she is probably keeping down the exact same amount.

we go in tomorrow for her 2 month visit so we can check her weight.  but from your experience is that too little?

  • Because 55 people have looked and no replies:

Personally, for my child, 15-18oz is too little. That being said, is she still having adequate wet diapers? Does she seem dehydrated (darker urine in her diapers, soft spot sunken below her skull, sunken eyes?) I'd definitely bring this up to your DR tomorrow. What was her birth weight? If she started at 9lbs, and is now only 10, then there is a weight issue, but if she was smaller that's different. Take all things into consideration regarding whether it's too little. HTH?

  • ^ Agreed. What was her birth weight? My daughter was 10.6 at her 2 month appointment, but she was born weighing 6.6.
  • she was 7.4 at birth, and we left the hospital at 6.10.  she has gained a bit of weight, but it is step wise rather than a curve.  she will gain 1lb in a week, then not gain for 10 days.  the drs are OK that she is gaining weight, but not happy in the way she is doing it..
  • My pediatrician said minimum of 2 times their weight in oz, so minimum of 20 oz for a 10 lb baby.  My DD has severe reflux and had stopped gaining weight when she was having less than 20 oz a day and she was only 9.5 lbs at the time.  They switched her to Alimentum and she started having 22-25 oz a day and started gaining weight again.  Unless you literally cannot afford the nutramigen she was doing well on, I would just go back to that.

  • Luckily the GI dr wrote a letter to the insurance company and got the nutramigen covered.  it was shipped today and we should get it soon.  She is on sample cans of it till then.  so far we have seen some improvements, like her stool is mustardy-seedy again rather than green.  and she is spitting up less.

she is definitely taking less than 20 since last Thursday.  she was 10.6 at that point.  we will see what she is tomorrow.  That will be 7 days.  she should have gained 5-7 oz.
