Postpartum Depression

Lexapro?

Anyone on this? I spoke with my OB while being discharged (had #3 Friday AM) and he wrote a Rx for Lexapro. I've never been on any meds so I took one last night before bed. Big mistake. I woke up anxious and almost freaking out. It was the weirdestfeeling. It went away aftera while thankfully. I could only think that is was the Lexapro.

I took one this AM (instead of a nighttime dose) and it seems ok so far.

Has anyone taken this before? Experiences?

Re: Lexapro?

  • For the first two weeks of taking it I felt a little spacy, dry mouth. I too had never been on meds before so the  doctor started me at 5mg and I eventually worked up to 10mg. I took it the morning b/c it didnt make me sleepy. After two weeks the side effects subsided and I felt fine. This drug actually worked wonders for my anxiety. I tapered off of it once I found out I was pg but if I should need it again I would not hestitate.  GL to you!

  • I took it for about a year after my son was born. My experience was pretty great. My only issues were when I tried to wean off, otherwise I felt great on Lexapro.

I do know exactly what you are describing when you talk about waking up in a panic. I had that a lot right after my delivery. I was afraid to go to sleep because I hated waking up like that.

My guess would be that it's part of the postpartum anxiety and not the meds. I only say that since it was after one dose and I know that SSRI's take awhile to build up in your system. With that said, you could be having an adverse reaction maybe? I would probably give it a few days. I found after about a week I really started to feel some changes. I felt that Lexapro was really great at reducing my anxiety, but these drugs react very differently in different people. If you feel like things are getting worse speak with your doctor for sure.

I've been on Cipralex (Lexapro) in the past for situational depression and had the same sort of side effects for the first week or so of taking it. Same thing -- was told to take it at night, but switched to taking it in the am. Worked much better for me.

Now I'm back on it again but a much higher dose for my PPD/anxiety. It was a rough start and have been on a few different meds, but eventually got put back on the Cipralex (Lexapro). Again I take it in the morning and all is well. I don't really have any other side effects from it. Give it some time, but if you think your mood or anxiety is getting worse, call your physician. Good luck!

This.  After one dose that shouldn't happen to you.  I had tons of that type of anxiety with a newborn and I wasn't on any medications at that time.  I think most moms do unless they are very relaxed, which is near impossible with your first baby.  I had a great experience with Lexapro and it actually makes me a little sleepy. I take it right before bed.

I did have extreme anxiety and insomnia on Prozac which happened after taking it for about 5 days.  I had to get off that immediately because I was shaking and couldn't sleep or unclench my jaw for about 2 days.  Now that was a bad experience.  Good luck! I think its a great drug.  Is it safe for BFing?

  • I have been on Lexapro at varying doses for about 4 years (through 2 pregnancies too) and have not had any trouble with it.  I take it in the morning.  I did have an episode like you described with the addition of cold sweats after the birth of DD #1 and the nurses told me it was probably a hormone let-down.
  • I was on Lexapro for about a year before I got pregnant and didn't have many side effects. Actually I can't really remember having any side effects at all. It definitely helped with my crying spells and leveled me out. I would give you doc a call to see if what you experienced is normal, and if so how long it will last.
