My first ever day at the ER...

So I was not super sick all weekend, but I had trouble keeping any solids down and threw up atleast a couple times a day. I woke up in the middle of the night to puke again and after that had horrible abdominal pains. I was able to take a hot shower, relieve some of the pain and go back to sleep but in the morning my abdomin was so sore that I had trouble getting out of bed. I call my doctors office who, with very little information from me but a look into my file at the ridiculous case of fibroids I have, told me to go to the ER. I freaked out. I immediately started crying and was trying to backtrack my way through the conversation (the only time I've spent any time in a hospital was when my brother was born when I was 4 so they kinda freak me out not to mention all I know about the ER is from scenes on television: they don't look like nice places). So the nurse interrupts me and tells me that if I've been having trouble with nausea then there is no way I have gotten enough fluids and if I'm throwing up that only compounds the problem. Just having an IV will probably help the cramps. Hubby wakes up in the middle of this phone call (he works graveyards) and asks whats going on. I then call my boss and explain that I'm being sent to the ER because I've been sick and am now having really bad cramps. He tells me to call him back and tell him when I can be back to work.

So we proceed to the ER. They sent us to the new hospital though, so it was actually pretty nice and 10am on a monday it was REALLY quiet, so not as tramatic as I thought. They gave me an IV, did ultrasounds. The baby is doing great and moving around a ton (hubby swears he heard the ultrasound tech say "he" but I do not know about that. I heard "its" but I was also in so much pain that I was having trouble breathing, so what do I know)

They ended up prescribing me zofran and lecturing me about the importance of food and fluids. I'm feeling a bit better this evening, still very sore, but I've had a liter and a half of water and a couple lighter snacks and am starting to feel like a real person again. They also said I could take 400mg ibuprofin (after calling my OB and checking with him) as long as I'm not doing that too regularly. Thats a relief since tylenol does NOTHING for muscle pain.

So there you have it, couldn't escape forever from that fibroid related pain they told me I would suffer through... Oh funniest part of the day: the ER doc comes back after talking to my OB and mentions light OCCASIONAL does of ibuprofin. But then says, "Unless you want something stronger, I mean you COULD take vicodin if you think you will need it. Would you like that? Would you like some vicodin?" My husband and I were both in shock, an ER doc that pushes narcotics? and on a pregnant lady no less? It definitely seems crazy to me, I think I will tough it out with the light Ibuprofin.

Okay a long one, but just thought I would update you all!

  • That must of been really scary.  I'm glad everything worked out in the end.  Great to hear your baby was moving all around and you go to see he/she on the ultrasound.

  • I'm glad you're okay - that sound stressful. Oh and good to see another Colorado girl on here :)

  • If I didn't have to go to the ER and have an emergency appendectomy 2 months before I got pregnant with my first little one, I would have been really scared when I went in to have her. I totally understand how you felt.
