Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9-10 mo: Still feeding cereals?

I'm still giving LO cereal about 3x a day with her meals, usually oatmeal at breakfast with fruit.  Rice with lunch and rice with dinner.

I'm wondering when to stop giving her cereals????  She's eating such a great variety of foods now, I feel like maybe she doesn't really need them (i know they are iron fortified, but she gets iron now from meats, green veggies and still her formula).  I just am wondering if she's having too much cereal for her age?

What are other moms of 9/10 mo olds doing???

  • Jules gets cereal about every other day with some fruit in the morning. Defnitely nor at every meal though.

  • DS has only ever had cereal with his breakfast.  Started with rice, than it was oatmeal and now it's mixed grain.  On the days he has cereal for breakfast, I mix it with 1 jar of stage 3 fruit puree.  He alternates cereal with scrambled eggs and toast, waffles and yogurt.  So it's like on a rotation every 4 days.  For lunch he has table food - chicken pieces, turkey pieces, pasta, soup, boiled veggies and fruit pieces.  For dinner he has a stage 3 dinner and 1/3 jar of stage 3 fruit puree.  He also has a 4oz bottle after each meal and snacks in between too.  He's like 50/50 baby food vs table food - actually leaning more toward 40/60 now.  Want to be totally done with baby foods around the 1 year mark.

  • DD usually gets cereal for breakfast with her fruit. Sometimes I'll use cereal to thicken her lunch/dinner purees if they thaw out a little runny, but not very often. I know she is getting iron from her green veggies and formula and a little bit of meat, so I'm not concerned about the amount of cereal she is eating these days.

  • After reading these posts, I think i'm way over doing the cereal--definitely going to back off the cereal to maybe at just breakfast and see how she does.

    Thanks :)

  • We still give Ryan cereal at night and sometimes in the morning. We mix it with some applesauce and he loves it.

  • My plan is to polish off the cereal we have left now and then be done with it!  I think we still have 2 boxes.

  • I haven't done cereal for a while.  She stopped eating it, so I stopped buying it.  She actually isn't on any baby food (besides formula) at all.  She is on table food only because she just doesn't eat baby food anymore.

  • I'm doing cereal with fruit at breakfast and dinner. She loves it. I'm planning to leave it for a couple of weeks more and then change breakfast. (In Mexico our strong meal is lunch)

but also I still give it to her to gain some weight. Our pedi wanted to gain a bit, so she recommended cereal for  a while.

  • We skipped cereal altogether and just started with home made purees. He gets all kinds of food now and his iron test came back fine at his 9month appointment so I think you're probably fine giving less cereal.

  • She still has cereal once or twice a day.  She doesn't like veggies much, but will eat them if I mix them in cereal.

  • We mix the dry cereal the purees bc DS hates the texture of the purees. He a veggie and fruit puree for lunch, veggie and meat for dinner and a dessert puree at around 7.

  • DD gets oatmeal about every other day just to keep things "flowing" other than that she eats what everyone else is eating (plus formula)

  • We aren't 9 months yet, but I'll answer anyway. The only time Harrison gets cereal is when I have to mix it in with either his fruit or veggie and only because it's too runny.

Other than that, he eats almost everything we eat, so I don't really see a need.
