Making baby food

I know DS won't be eating baby food any time soon, but when is the best time to start making baby food? Or for the first few feedings should I make it fresh?

Re: Making baby food

  • What I did when my daughter was ready for solids was started with cereal, then went to banana (just mashed with a fork). Once I was sure she was really into eating and ready for it I would choose a fruit (peaches was the second one) make a big batch of it, keep enough out for 2 days or so then freeze the rest. I would try the new food for a couple days then go onto the next, making a big batch again and freezing the rest. There are no allergies in my family and I know enough people that I could give the baby food to if she really did not like it or had a reaction, so it would not go to waste. Now that she has had most foods I will take a night to make what we consider staples for her, apples, pears, peaches, plums, squash, sweet potato, brocolli, cauliflower, etc.

www.wholesomebabyfood.com is a good resource for making baby food.

  • we started slowly at 4.5m with the rice and oatmeal cereals...and by 5m started with mashed up avacado. When she was eating well, we started on the greens and oranges...and I'd steam or roast things like squash and sweet potatoes and spinach and food process it and freeze in silicone sweet trays.

Stuff lasts in the freezer for 3m before starting to get freezer burn, so I've just been making med. size batches and remake things later if needed (they only eat a few tiny bites of cubes at first). I also try to buy things that are in season, since they taste better. Sooooo much yummier then the jarred stuff, and now we are starting to mix and match (mmm, squash, apple, potato stew is a fav! as well as split pea potato)
