E's crib has a drop side but she's been in it for almost 3 years and I've never once "dropped" the side. I'm about 5'6" tall though.
I wonder how furniture makers will design cribs in the future?
At 5'2 it is pretty hard to get a sleeping kid out of a crib when dropped to the lowest setting, or even one that refuses to stand up or scoots into a corner.

This is exactly why we bought a drop-side crib. I'm short--5'4", so not super short, but still--I tested it out and couldn't reach on the lowest setting. I wonder how they'll address that issue?
I am 5'4" and do not have a drop side crib. I guess I never take Mathis out of the crib when he is sleeping, although I do put him down asleep. It's a little awkward but it works.
I am 5'2" and we don't have a drop side. It is a little awkward getting him down all the way, but by the time he was old enough for me to put the mattress all the way down, we were putting him down drowsy, but still awake, anyway. And we rarely need to get him out of the crib asleep (he wakes up before we get him in the morning). I have leaned on the edge (with my feet floating off the ground) before when he has been asleep in my arms and I wanted to transfer him without waking him. Probably not the safest, but that rarely happens, also!!
Granted I'm 5'10 but our crib is not drop sided. It's also a lot lower to the ground than the drop side cribs I've seen, so at least the top would be closer to a shorter person's waist.

I'm 5'5 and never realized they even made beds like this! Anyways yeah its a little hard putting her in asleep because I have to lunge over but I mean she's going to have to learn how to fall asleep on her own eventually right?
I'm 5'9" and we have a drop side. We've never used the drop side though. He didn't sleep in his crib until he was 4 months anyway [slept in the swing]. I do wonder how they will address this issue. I have friends who's kids climb out of the crib even when on the lowest setting!!!
I have a drop side... I'm quite certain it was part of the recall, but I cannot at all reach the mattress in a non-drop side crib (on the lowest setting, which we're on now). We keep an eye on it and make sure all parts are secured on it at all times... However, in the last couple of weeks it's gotten 'stuck' in the up position, so I'm having to literally get on my tiptoes to put her into the bed (sometimes drowsy, sometimes asleep) and lean far over. Good thing it's a soft landing b/c she's plopped down several times. lol I got the 'kit' to convert it when the recalls were going on, so I guess we'll just go ahead and make it a non-drop permanently just so that we know nothing will happen.

This is true. I'm 5'2" and we have a drop side, it's a Pali, never been recalled, and is made very differently from the ones that have issues. In fact I had to get online and look at a picture of another dropside crib to figure out how/where children were getting stuck because it's just not possible with mine.
However, dropped, the side of my crib is about as high as some of the more modern designed stationary cribs. Of course since I'm little I still have to lean way over to put him down. And we've had to have the mattress all the way down for a long time because he learned to pull up at 6 months. It was really hard to get him in then, now I just sort of chunk him over the side.
I'm not sure if we'll keep this crib for the next kid or not. I'm thinking not, but not because of the drop side, I just want something else.
My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

Ours is a Pali as well and has the internal hardware. I use the drop side often, as I am 5'2" and put DS2 in sleeping. DH has left it up before, and I had to practically drop DS in and woke him up or almost did.... obviously we need to work on going to sleep drowsy, but I think I would need to use a stool if we didn't have a drop side.

Haha! My DH does the same thing, he never puts the side down and I get so mad when he leaves it that way. I've learned how to juggle the baby and drop the side with one hand (and my hip or knee) but we did discuss putting a step stool next to the crib.

We don't have a drop side, but I am 5'9" and DH is 5'8"-ish. Our design must be pretty high because we have it on the middle setting and DH can just put DS in the crib. I can still lay him down and bend over to kiss his head when he is lying, but I am all leg so it helps.
My SIL is 5'2" and there is no way she can lay DS in the crib. She doesn't put him in often, but it isn't a problem because we usually just sit him down and he will lie down and go to sleep on his own - after his story of course.

Ours is a drop-side crib. Not sure if we will have baby #2 but will definitely have to throw it away rather than sell it at a garage sale because I can't even remember the name of it and don't have the manual to recommend the kits to make it safer.
I was wondering about how I'd get another baby in/out without the drop side. I thought we might have to go to a pack and play, and even with that I had trouble lowering her down or picking her up when she was asleep. I have a 27" inseam. I'm short.
I wonder how little people do it?
I tried to search briefly online but it just pulled up the owner of hirelittlepeople.com showing off his "crib." Like MTV Cribs, not baby cribs.

We have a drop side. I'm 5'5" and do have a hard time putting the kids down if they are asleep and it's on the lowest setting. But this is usually only true when they are smaller (my kids started pulling up at 6mo, but would still fall asleep nursing).
I'll probably get the kit to make it stable, but won't buy a new crib.

I've seen special cribs with a "door" on the front of the rails - so you can slide them in and out directly onto the mattress.

Interesting! A step ladder would also probably work.

We had read that this was coming and bought a crib w/o a drop side.
KKM - We're still on the highest level so putting DD in bed isn't difficult but I feel like it might be as the crib drops.
I wonder if all retailers must stop selling those currently on their floors, etc?
