Babies: 6 - 9 Months

BF help/advice please

I've been supplementing for a while because she wasn't gaining enough weight on BM. Well, the last day or so if feels like my supply has just tanked. This morning I didn't even feel full and I always do. She is down to nursing/drinking a bottle to 3-4 times a day which I think is normal at this point?

Is it too late in the game to get my supply up again and is it even worth it- I was only planning on bf for a year. What causes such a drop in supply?

I'm just not sure I'm ready to give it up...

Re: BF help/advice please

  • Has she recently decreased the amount she eats at night?  My breasts never feel "full" anymore unless she misses a night feeding, and my supply is just fine.

  • Have you had AF yet? A few days before I start my supply always tanks it always comes back though.

No, not yet. I'm thinking I need to POAS.....with my supply tanking and my never ending appetite. Hhmmm or maybe I am getting AF finally.

  • I assume that your LO is on solids by now, which will cause her to drink less milk throughout the day.  Since we introduced solids at 5 months, I've had to take supplements (I take fenugreek, goat's rue and Motherlove More Milk Plus) AND add extra pumping sessions.  Oh, and STTN or at least for longer stretches can cause your supply to drop, and as PP mentioned AF will also cause a decrease.  (Once I added the pumping session, I actually stopped my cycle again.  Yay!)  Just remember that milk is all about supply and demand!!  Also, my DD is nursing 5 times a day, 3x after she's had solids and twice before nap/bedtimes. HTH!!

  • Thanks for all of the encouragement ladies! I will try pumping tomorrow. She just increased with her amount of solids a lot and I'm just worried she is not getting enough BM. I will call a LC tomorrow and start my fenugreek again. Hopefully we can make it another 3 months!

  • I've had AF regularly since 11 weeks and this month's drop in supply was the worst yet.  I worked the last 3 days and was short an entire bottle each time.  I've been drinking 48 oz of mother's milk tea and eating 3 packs of oatmeal a day - today I pumped 1.5 oz more than the last two days so it's starting to come back up.  Hang in there!

  • I think it is natural and normal for your supply to decrease when LO starts solids.  I wouldn't worry about it...

Also, your body will adjust so you don't get so "uncomfortable" with LO feeding schedule.

  • The way your boobs feel doesn't have anything to do with your supply, so don't worry too much. Hopefully you LC will have some good info for you.
