s/o mail carrier tips/gifts

HOW do you tip them? Do you just put an envelop in the mailbox that says ?Mail Carrier?? I don't know our carrier's name, and I'm pretty sure he's on vacation right now. Not that there's anything wrong with the sub - I just want my gift to go to our usual carrier. Should I wait until he's back? (Which will be after the holidays, since we're going to be traveling and put our mail on hold).

Until our current carrier, I had had terrible mail carriers for several years. It really made me appreciate a good carrier, so I?d like to thank him for not damaging our mail, not trampling our yard, and not skipping our street for several days at a time. But I don?t know how you leave them a little gift without it ending up lost in the mail system or going to the wrong person.

  • I could have written the same post!  I don't know our guy's name, but I do love him and know he's not our carrier every single day.

  • I WAH so I kind of hang out in our front room so I can catch our's on the way through because I'm horrible with remembering names, and we haven't had our current one over the holidays yet.  My other suggestion would be to call your P/O and ask for the name of your regular carrier or leave it out addressed to "The Best Mail Carrier Ever" or something along those lines :-)

  • Put it in your box with "Mail Carrier" on the envelope just like you said BUT I would wait until your regular gets back. Technically a floater should give any tips they receive to the regular carrier (who will sometimes split a small portion of their tips with their regular floaters) on the route but there's obviously no way of guaranteeing that will ever happen so if you want it to go to him, I'd definitely wait.

Every route will have a floater even if you have a steady regular carrier. Since mail is delivered 6 days a week your route will be handled once a week by a floater on your regular's rotating day off (one week it's monday, next week it's tuesday, etc). If you put it in the box on your regular's day off the floater should give it to the regular when he sees him/ her the next day. It's much more likely to happen with a regular floater than say with someone who's covering a vacation and a decent regular will split his/ her tips with their floater since they cover the route regularly as well. Of course some routes are in limbo and don't have a regular and then you might have someone different every day (but the same people week by week) in which case your best bet is just to keep your eye out for that carrier and catch them while they're at your house.

  • We have about 3 carriers that rotate. I don't get it, but apparently none of them get to work FT any longer out of our branch.
