I just have to AW my brother. He saved a baby's life this morning. He had gotten off the interstate in McCalla and stopped at a gas station to purchase a drink. He then got back in his car and took the back road towards Bessemer, (which he never does, he wouldn't had even been on this road had he not stopped to get a drink) well when he was driving along and woman was outside of her house near the road screaming and crying with a baby in her arms. He pulled over to see what was going on and the baby wasn't breathing and his lips were blue. The mother was hysterical and really couldn't tell him what was wrong. He got the mother and baby in the car, drove to the nearest hosptial and called 911 on the way there. In the meantime they were both shacking the baby and calling his name, patting him on the back and by the time the baby arrived at the hospital he was crying. My brother said the woman told him that she didn't have a car nor phone to call for help. At the hospital they had the baby (one year old) hooked up to machines and were about to transport him to Children's. He left his card with the mother and told her to call him when they found out what was wrong. My brother said had he been thinking a little better he may have started CPR and waited for the ambulance, but he was freaking out and just snatched the baby and mother in the car and sped off to the hospital.
I'm so proud of him. He said people were driving by and not stopping or anything. That baby might live to be something great because of my brother.
Re: AW, my brother saved a baby's life
On that note, the number of people that DON'T stop or help is amazing. We were just watching that show "What would you do?" where they had a (fake) screaming baby left in a car on a hot day. Such a small percentage of people stopped or tried to help. I couldn't believe it.
So awesome, Casie! Your brother is a hero!!
And Bethany is totally right...it's amazing the number of people who will walk right by you when something bad is happening. I was in Walmart several months ago and this lady fell down in front of me and cracked her head on the floor and was very obviously having a seizure. Her mom was with her and I just asked what I could do after calling 911 -- and her mom asked if I could sit with them until the paramedics came to help keep her from thrashing around and hurting herself even more (all the while, she is very actively seizing and not conscious).
Not one, but two ladies, stepped OVER this poor woman's seizing body so they could get to the diapers (she fell in the diaper aisle) and didn't even give her a second glance. I mean, it was obvious we were helping her, she was seizing, my baby is asleep in her carseat in the cart right next to us, the seizing lady's toddler was crying in her cart next to us. It was horrible...and no one else stopped to even ask if they could help. I was pretty sad that day.
Not to mention people who rush past elderly people to get in a door (to let the door slam in the face of the old person) or just generally rush around in their own little cloud of selfishness. It's good to know that there are still good people out there who care about their fellow man!
That is horrible! People really make me sick sometimes. I cannot for the life of me understand how people can be so selfish...
Good for your brother! That is amazing
And I remember from college (I was a psych major in undergrad ) talking about the 'not helping' phemnomenon that goes on with people. it seems weird but it's very common that people become afraid/concerned for themselves to the point of not aiding others in trouble. there's been a lot of study on it over the years, after a famous case where a woman was murdered outside an apartment building in the 50s and people heard her because they were home at the time- but she was not saved. it's very strange to think about.
it's very admirable that your brother did what he did! so glad he could help that child.
That is a wonderful thing that your brother did.
Just think... what he did could have a lasting impact. I'm sure that baby boy will grow up hearing about how a stranger took a moment to help and helped save his life.

I have tears in my eyes when reading this one. You have reason to be proud of him. You do realize there are angels out there parading as people - GOD does put them here on earth to do the right thing when necessary. He is one of those chosen - share this story with the Birmingham News as well as your local TV stations. This is a human relations story - something good to have repeated.
