Car Seat ??

Awhile back someone posted about their child being able to unlock their car seat. I was just wondering if you figured how to to stop them!?!

My 22 month old has figured out how to unbuckled the top clip. I'm not sure what to do. I've now turned him FFing so I can see when he does it and stop to fix it.

Any ideas what I can do?

TIA!

Re: Car Seat ??

  • jeez that's scary. Sorry, don't have any advice, but I can see how that would happen a lot I guess as kids get older?? Never thought about it and DD hasn't tried so far, but she loves putting those kind of clips together, just hasn't figured out how to take them apart yet.

  • what seat do you have?

If the clip is at a proper height, and the harness is properly tight, this should be next to impossible in most seats. The pressure needed to open a chest clip is far past what a normal toddler possesses, and they should not be able to move it down from their armpit level

    I completely disagree with you.

My daughter has been able to undo her carseat since 16 months.  You told me it shouldn't be possible if she was buckled properly.  Even though I was sure I was properly securing her, I took her to a seat-check clinic, where they confirmed that I have had her straps tight enough, clip at proper height, etc.  They watched her undo the clasp of her My Ride 65 easily. (admittedly, they were surprised)

To the OP, the only thing that worked for us was being very consistent and use of a strong "I'm serious" voice when reminding her to keep it buckled.  She is allowed to undo her carseat when we shut-off the car and give her permission to undo it.  I think this takes away some of the 'excitement' of undoing the clip.  She also loses 'car toy' privileges if I catch her undoing it without permission.

I generally don't have issues with her undoing it anymore.

  • But you are agreeing with me. :) Your daughter's case is rare. The reaction of the CPSTs should tell you that.

One thing I thought of after the fact for you, Becca, is to call Graco and see if you can get a replacement chest clip. We have that seat, and when the straps are tight, it's really hard to move it down. There might be something with the clip that a new one would fix. Although, if she's good about not touching it now, maybe it doesn't matter.

OP...you didn't mention what seat you have. I know the loose chest clip is a pretty common problem in the Evenflo Triumph, so it might just be your seat. The other thing you can try is sticking a strip of velcro (the rough side) on each side of the buckle. A lot of kids hate the feel, and it won't do anything to affect the seat.

    oh, and Becca, YGPM

Yeah, they were surprised, but if my DD could do it at 16 months (and she is kind of a wimp) - I wouldn't consider it at all unusual that a nearly 2 year old could do it.

    Also, YGPM too

  • We as well the MyRide. It's actually a common problem with this specific seat. I did some research and apparently the clip bends thus making it easier for children to unbuckle it.

Graco sent me a new one and for now he can't get it undone. If it happens again, I'll be getting a new seat!!

I did try the velcro trick but he didn't care!! The biggest thing for me was I had to turn him FFing so I could see when he was doing it! I hope to return him RFing when I can trust him NOT to do it again!

  • Oh and he wasn't moving the clip he'd put his little finger on the top of the clip and push the "button" and it would open.

When I called Graco the lady had taken 5ish calls about it in the last 6 months. I hope there will be a recall!!
