2nd Trimester

Holy heartburn!! :(

I usually only end up with heartburn on Super Bowl Sunday because of the large amount of crappy food I consume... but lately it's been hanging around, not greasy-food induced.

Tums don't really help and the whole thing is now making me nauseous.  Earlier I thought it was because my pants were too tight, which sometimes makes me nauseous, but I'm in sweats and it's killing me! Tongue Tied

Any other advice besides tums?

  • If Tums are not cutting it then I can't really suggest anything but to ask you doctor.  Last time I tried to suffer through it (had ice cream and milk every night before bed, slept upright, and avoided red sauces), but this time I will be asking for a prescription antacid.  My cousin took one once she hit 2nd tri and never had any issues after that.

  • With DD, I had heartburn before I even got a BFP and had it until I delivered her. I even had to ask for medicine in the hospital while I was in labor because I had it so bad. I got it from everything, even water. All I did was eat tums, massive amounts of them. I took Reglan my first trimester which is supposed to help with it... it didn't. It might just be something you have to deal with. Good news... almost literally, the minute she came out, it was gone. This time I haven't had any. Even had a buffalo chicken sub today. Hang in there and talk with your OB. Hopefully there is something that will help.

  • I was getting heartburn so bad that I was throwing up and Tums were not helping at all. I started taking Zantac last week and I havent had any heartburn since. Try checking and see what over the counter preventative heartburn meds your OB is ok with. I hope you start feeling better!

  • Zantac, milk, lots of water, ice cream, no acidic or fried foods.

  • A low dose Zantac (75mg) or Tums is probably about your best bet. I've also found drinking carbonated water goes a long way with helping calm heartburn. Contrary to what many folks will tell you, please do not try using milk to counter heart burn. It will provide some immediate relief going down as it coats the lining of your stomach, but milk also contains calcium and protein which will eventually stimulate even more acid production. This is why folks with ulcers, Chrons, etc, are told to stop drinking milk immediately.
