My nip felt like it was in a vice. I did get three whole drops of liquid out, but it took a while, and it hurt. This was my left side.
I didn't even attempt the dead-boob on my right side. Probably won't ever get that side to work.
BF asked me to at least pump out the good stuff in the beginning, which I agreed to. But, damn...
Re: Just tried out my breast pump... ouch! Hope she likes formula!
go to a Lactation Consultant if you can! i pumped for weeks with a wrong sized cone, then my nippled cracked and started bleeding so i asked the LC what I was doing wrong. she helped fit me with the right size and after that it never hurt.
it never felt good, but it didn't hurt anymore once i got the right fit.
Maybe you're doing it wrong ;-)
Seriously though - it shouldn't hurt. You may have had the pump turned up too high. It's also going to feel much different once you have milk to pump. Your body isn't really ready to lactate until it gets the signal from birth hormones (even though you may be leaking colostrum now).

I will restate my original statement for those that couldn't follow along, namely the people quoted above. I'll say it slowly.
I-TRIED-OUT-MY-BREAST-PUMP.
I didn't say I'm going to be hanging out pumping for the next few days, but I did want to take it out of the box, plug it in, latch it on, and make sure the thing worked before I found out at an inopportune moment.
You know... being sensibly prepared.
Any other questions?
This was my question as well.
I EPed for 10 months and only in the last 2 did it finally stop hurting. My nips were always sore. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I did have a good supply though so I guess I can't complain too much...
Oh and to top it off I am allergic to lanolin. Joy.
i just died.
Then you are a zombie!!!! Get off the bump, Zombie!!!!
Breastfeeding hurts like hell for about the first 6 weeks. If you can deal with it for that long, you're golden. My nips cracked, bled and hurt SO bad in the beginning. I still nurse my 15 month old once a day to avoid having that happen again. It was miserable. But it is so worth it once you get the hang of it.
Classic!
You're considering formula?
Can you believe it?
I can only afford one humanitarian effort in a day. I already de-haired myself for the convenience of the doc and OB nurses.
You can't expect me to do something like give up my love of canned formula in the same day!
hahahaha..
Baby steps, Emjay.
Good call on the trying out your pump....with my son, I started off with a pump that turned out to be a piece of crap, and so I had to go buy a new, better one, about a week into my nursing. Not really fun times. So hats off to you, sista.
I hated pumping with my DS. I had supply issues and was pumping to try to boost supply. But pumping when milk isn't coming out is just torture. And it wasn't exactly a morale boost to see so little milk at the end. I never once had that feeling that moms describe where they HAVE to nurse because their breasts are so full and engorged -- but I can imagine that a breast pump doesn't "hurt" then -- it's just a relief.
If you're pumping just to get colostrum out, that sounds horrible. Plus, since it's thicker and not very plentiful, wouldn't you lose most of it in the tubing and bottle, and it wouldn't get to the baby?

My MW hooked me up to the breast pump to jump start my labor. Whoa! Didn't take much after that.
