some more CD (PF) questions...

what do you do when your LO sleeps for more than 2-3 hours?  I feel so bad that E's been sitting on a wet PF for over 3 hours now...I know some mamas use other systems for nights but not everyone, right?  (Lori?)

eta - maybe i could put in a fleece(? microfiber?) liner to wick away moisture?  do you double up the PF for more absorbency?  maybe trifold one underneath?

is there a trick to getting the PF, the snappi, and the cover off and on quickly?   I feel like I take forever to do so - I put a clean PF under his butt (under the cover), undo the snappi, wipe, remove the dirty PF and the cover together, drop the dirty PF into the wetbag, roll up (jelly roll) or fold (angel wing) the clean PF, put on the snappi, redo the snappi to make it tighter, slide the cover under his butt, and put the cover on.  phew. Smile  any tips on making this go faster?  maybe I just need more practice?

thanks!

Re: some more CD (PF) questions...

  • We change every 2 hours when she's awake, usually she's not wet or dirty that often but we still check. When she naps during the day (usually about 2 hours) we just put on her PF and cover and that's it. For nights we put a hemp liner inside her PF and then a fleece liner on top of that (so that the fleece is closest to her skin). Does that make sense? For our "fleece liners", we went to JoAnn's to the remnent section and bought the fleece that was super clearance and just cut that into sizes that would fit. Cheap and easy and gets the job done.c

As far as a clean diaper, I wipe her, put the wipe in the diaper and drop it in the pail. Then I put the new diaper under her, snappi, fasten the cover and we're off. PF take practice for sure! I have a friend that CD but uses fitteds, she HATES Pf! :)

    thanks!

this is the reason why we're now using BG 4.0s! PFs didn't work for me :-(.

  • It gets a lot faster with practice. We also don't do any special diaper folding -- just lay baby on it and wrap like a regular diaper. DH does the CDing and does so willingly -- he would not still be on board all these months later if it was still a pain. :)

We use BGs at night, but I sometimes put one of the extra BG liners into the PF when I think he might need extra protection. I'd do that at night if I ran out of BGs and it worked great. We don't change diapers for about 12 hours overnight, so just that little insert can make a big difference.

  • well i change her before every nap so she always goes to sleep with a dry diaper... and i don't know if this is just when they are older but Miss A doesn't pee in her sleep, only when she is awake...so if her diaper is wet when she gets up from a nap it is b/c she peed right when she woke up...so she is never sleeping in a wet diaper.  during the day she is never up for more than 3 hrs before a nap so that's the max amount of time she is in the same diaper (unless her diaper is dry at change time, then of course i just put it back on).

i know it seems bad when they are sitting in a wet diaper but (a) if they don't mind it and (b) the skin does not become red/irritated then i don't see a problem with it.  not saying you shouldn't change them regularly when they are awake...just saying that you shouldn't feel bad if he sleeps 4-5 hrs (or longer) in the same diaper. (fleece liners can help you w/the stay dry effect if it really bothers you) we used to use PFs for overnights for the longest time and she'd wake up with a soaking diaper but it never bothered her (or her skin) so i didn't worry about it.  we only switched to goodmamas for overnight when i started worrying about the absorbency of the PFs.  now we can use either since we're doing EC and she doesn't seem to wet as much overnight (since i can get her to pee right before bed and sometimes get her to the potty before she pees in the morning)

to boost absorbency you can add another PF but that is pretty bulky.  doublers/inserts work better for that

PFs do get better/faster with time/practice.  i used to lay a new PF underneath, unfold the dirty one, wipe, then toss the diaper w/wipe into the pail while holding her legs up in the air.  now i just take the dirty diaper off and before i set her bottom back down i grab a new PF and lay it underneath.  you'll get faster, i promise :) and there's nothing wrong with switching to another type of diaper if you don't like the PFs! it's all personal preference..

  • hrm, so it sounds like i should to get used to touching the sopping wet PF Smile  that would save me the step of removing the cover completely and getting it back under him again...  I will look into inserts too.  glad to know that it's not an issue for them to be wet/dirty for many hours as long as it's not irritating their skin, and that absorbency is the main concern.

    thanks ladies!

I still have problems with this.  Totally why I never really got into fitteds either  (beyond newborn stage) because I hated unsnapping a pee soaked mess.

I think you will get faster at prefolds but like Jaime said, maybe try out something else.
