To be in labor or not to be in labor....that is the question...

So my hubby and I went in today for my umpteenth stress test and ultrasound to measure babies fluids, etc..  And then I come home, go the bathroom, and for the first time get bloody discharge and some spotting. I call the doctors office to let them know, because I know bloody show can be a sign of labor, and they tell me not to go in to l & d and wait to see if I have contractions, rhythmic pain, etc. It just seems so vague to me in a way and confusing, because on and off the last month I get tightening in my stomach, a crampy back, and just recently the last week uncomfortable period like cramps. So how do you know what is "really" labor?? A sign of blood alarms me, but I guess I'll hang in there and see what happens. How did you all know ??

  • I never went into labor, but I hope you're all right! I think they said if I had more than 7 ctx in an hour to go in.

  • They're all real contractions, really.  But labor contractions will hurt and not stop.

You could lose our mucus plug and not go into labor for days.

Ok that is what I was thinking...that if I actually felt pain then it would be more of a concern and I would call the doctor again...Thanks.  Right now it's a lot of  period like crampiness and some back crampiness.

If that starts getting regular or more painful, then start paying attention.  Sounds like it could be the start of something! (But that could start and stop for a few days.)

I've been having nagging contractions forever and they make me nuts but don't do anything.  I'd try to avoid the hospital until you think it's for real.

If it's annoying and not progressing, see if a hot bath slows them down.

  • Exactly... right?!! I wanna avoid the hospital if I can.. LOL!!!

Those are labor contractions dear.  That doesn't mean that you're in labor or that labor's starting, but those are definitely the starting contractions of labor (when you're in the middle of labor, those peaceful AF/back cramps will be a very distant memory).  Watch to see if they become consistent.  I'm so happy that with DS1 I never had many "real" contractions before labor (I think I had 2 or 3 the entire week before, but none before that).  GL, let us know how it goes.

  • I always thought women were crazy when they said labor feels like when you have to go to the restroom, but nothing comes out.  Until this occurred with my labor.  That is the way I realized what true labor pains were.  I also lost my mucus plug a few days prior with my second daughter, so I knew it was coming soon.  GL!!
