Milk Sensitivity/Allergy, etc Mommas...

I seriously doubt my LO has this, but it's always in the back of my mind as he is still a little cantakerous (sp?) even after starting treatment for reflux. He gets gassy and farty, and I know that's also a symptom (but also "normal").

My biggest question is... define "muscousy stools". Seriously, there needs to be a image gallery to show normal vs not normal. Smile

He is breastfed, and his stools are now about once every 1-2 days and usually quite a lot at one time. They are mustard color and somewhat seedy.. but.... almost gooey. Not to get too TMI (well it is a poo post)... but when you pull the diaper away from his butt - its sticky with strings pulling away between the two.

Is this mucous? Or is it normal consistency?

 Thanks!

  • DD has mucousy stools and what you have described sounds like mucousy stools to me.

  • Pedi said C's stools are normal and they sound just like that. Sooo I think it's hard to tell. Lol.

This is my siggy. Love it.

  • Our Dr just brought this up last week.  As she was looking him he had an explosive bowel movement that smelled really foul.  It basically filled his diaper (almost to the point of leaking out) and was liquid-- like dark yellow water.  She suggested that I cut out milk, eggs and nuts to determine if he has an allergy.  He has also had poops like you described, prior to these blow outs.  It might be something you want to mention to your Dr.

  • My DS is having reflux/sensitivity issues and I found these pictures to show you an example (you can click on each photo to make them bigger..)

I always question if he has "mucus stools" and I definitely dont think so after I saw these!

  • DS was diagnosed with a milk sensitivity and his stools sound similar to what you described, but I didn't think they were very mucousy.  The doctor didn't even ask about his stool to diagnose.  He was pulling away from the breast and crying a few minutes into feeding, had a ton of eczema on his face, and had a lot of gas in his stomach.  We had only brought him in for the crying at the breast, but based on those three symptoms she told me milk was the culprit.

I think it's hard to differentiate between an MSPI baby and a regular baby (I mean what baby isn't a little gassy?)  So I would ask your doctor, they'll have a better idea of what is normal and what's indicative of an MSPI.

  • Sounds mucousy to me...

DD was diagnosed with MSPI (blood in stool, very gassy on Nutramigen, eczema looking patches on her face) and once we switched to the elemental formula (EleCare), her symptoms are almost completely gone.  She still has reflux, but now she doesn't cry during/after feeding, she takes naps during the day, is significantly less gassy, and started STTN!

  • Your description sounds like what our ped said was a normal stool. DS was diagnosed with blood in his stools and a milk protein allergy and his stools were like dark green slime. They said the yellow with seeds is exactly what it should look like.
