How did you switch from night time pull-ups to underwear at night?

Ok well, not YOU, but you know what I mean. Stick out tongue

DS is finally PT'ed, and hasn't had an accident in over 1.5 months, but I'm too scared to just bite the bullet and put underwear on him at night. The main reason is that he almost always ends up in our bed at some point in the night (which is a whole other issue all together.) I have a waterproof pad on his bed, but I really don't feel like putting one on mine too.  He said last night that "I'll wear a diaper to bed forever," so I don't want to fight him on it at this point, but I want to make the transition soon.

I just need to suck it up and do it, right?

  • Is he waking up dry EVERY morning? That was when we did it... it didn't make sense to spend money on pull ups that were being thrown away dry... DS comes in our bed around 5:00am so I have learned (yes the hard way :( ) to tell him he has to pee before he comes in my bed, in fact, if he gets up at all in the night, no matter what time, he has to pee before he goes back down... we stop liquids about an hour before bed and he has to pee immediately before he goes to sleep. we have the occasional accident, but it is usually when he's sick or something and sleep is off.

  • Honestly, Taylor has been trained since August or thereabouts.  She only still has an occasional accident when she can't get her tights down in time to get up on the big potty in the school-age room in the morning at daycare.

She is still in pull ups at night though because she has always peed so much at night. She is doing better, and we can go several dry nights.  I'm just not willing to make that transition yet, especially since peeing doesn't seem to wake her up. She's ok with it, and we're ok with it.  We'll get there eventually, but it's no rush for us.

I'm THRILLED to be done with diapers though.  The pullups, I can handle as long as it is one per night.

    Good luck!

  • It's kind of hard to tell, b/c those stupid pull-ups are so absorbant. But just the other day it was pretty full. I thought about putting his underwear on, then a pull-up over his underwear, but he refused.

  • We're no where close, and DD has been daytime (and naptime) potty trained for over 2 years. She's just a really deep sleeper, and she doesn't wake up. I'm waiting until she's consistently dry in the morning and she starts to wake up to use the potty in the middle of the night if she needs to. She also frequently sneaks into our bed at night, and I don't want to deal with accidents there either.

  • I just now started letting DD sleep in undies and she has been potty trained for almost 2 years.

  • DS trained before he turned 2, so 2.5 years ago.  He still pees a pull-up full every single night, even if we wake him and make him pee when we go to bed.  I feel like he just might wear pull-ups together.  Once he's consistently dry, then make the switch.

  • My DS had been dry every night for months (long before he was potty trained) so once he went to underwear we did it all the time
  • After 18 months of being day trained, and more than 2 weeks of a dry diaper in teh morning.  Honestly we tried a few times before then and only had accidents.  DS was really ready so he was a big help in the process.  That being said he now wakes up to pee once a night and DH then has to reput him down.
