Ello - re your siggy

I feel the need to point this out yet again since it comes up frequently about IP banning.

It will NOT work on the nest/knot/bump specifically because you would knock out large segments of people who use the same ISP as the person you are trying to ban.  It's called "dynamic IP" where the IP address is assigned every time you turn off or on your modem.  So really, all the banned person would have to do is reboot their modem and they're back on.

So, there's an explanation for why they don't do it.

I know their explanation. For situations like workplace networks, all they would need to do is implement a review ticket system, or an appeals process of some sort. Block first, and then unblock after appeal and review. I guarantee that on a site with this level of traffic (which is actually much lower than many other forum environments), the "we blocked an entire office" situation would not come up very frequently.

It should also be noted that I did not pull this information out of my ass, but that I was in fact advised by a sys admin/developer/forum moderator  who works with a much larger online community than we are in here on TB.

The Bump's choice to make excuses for their laziness instead of reevaluating their ban policy is irresponsible and is the same as condoning the inappropriate TOS-violating behavior that goes on here on a regular basis.

  • It's not blocking an entire office, it's blocking everyone in an entire city with the same ISP.  I know several girls in my area that would be mighty pissed if they were suddenly banned by the bump/nest.

You still aren't accounting for the fact that all someone would have to do is turn off their router/modem, reboot, and be back online again.
