PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
I'm not sure if I have PPD, I just think that my anxiety and mild depression has only gotten worse since have my DS 4 1/2 months ago. My DH is not happy w/ the way I freak out all the time and how depressed I can get. I am in fear of loosing my husband since he isn't happy. Anyway I didn't know who to ask this to other than you ladies. Who do I call to help me? What kind of doctor? My regular doctor? My OB/GYN? I think I just need to see what anti-anxiety meds would do for me. However, my DH doesn't want me on meds while breastfeeding. So I'm stuck right now. Anyway...if you can help me...I would greatly appreciate it.
TIA
Re: Help me...which doctor do I call?
I posted this to someone below too but how about a psychiatrist? I know that prospect seems a little frightening for some people but my co-worker has pretty severe OCD and he highly recommends seeing a psychiatrist instead of a regular family doctor. Psychiatrists are specially trained to select the right medicine and dosage for you. He explained it to me like this: You could go to a general practitioner for your pregnancy, but you'd probably rather see an OB/GYN. Why wouldn't this be the same way? You also get therapy in addition to any prescription you might need.
I got my Rx this morning from my family doctor but am planning to call a psychiatrist through my company's EAP.
A psychiatrist would be able to help you select a medicine and dosage that is safe for BFing, as well. I would suggest asking your husband to join you for a session or two so he can gain a better understanding of what you are going through and how he can help.
Good luck!

I totally agree with the pp. With that said, talking to anyone is better than no one. I saw my OB first. She was who I felt close to and safe with. Once I was bit more comfortable with my diagnosis I saw a psychiatrist and a therapist with training in PPD.
FWIW, I breastfed from the beginning even though I was on meds. My baby was premature and only 4.5 lbs, so I had a lot of worries about the medications affect on him. My OB, psychiatrist, and DS pediatrician all supported my continuing to nurse him and really encouraged me to continue. It is a personal decision, but don't give it up if you don't want to. My son has had no issues related to my medication. we are still nursing once a day at 13 months.

I would rec a therapist who can then refer you to a psychiatrist. I think if you are in a rush to get meds then a psychiatrist because that is what they do. (ie: if you have been on rx before baby) However, in reading your post I wonder if you feel you need meds. You mentioned that your husband was the one who was concerned about your behavior. It might be a good idea to get an objective point of view and then talk about RX if it's a concern for you while breastfeeding. A good therapist will have a list of psych dr that she can refer you to and then she/he will also be there for you to process the whole experince with. With a psychiatrist you usually see them 1x per month whereas a therapist can be seen anywhere from 1x per week to whatever you need.
Hope this helps
