crib toys

I received and bought a few crib toys for Elise, but I'm wondering if I should attach them to the crib or keep them in a box and take them out when it's playtime.  For example, one is the kicking piano and another one is a little mirror with sounds and rattles.  I know you're not supposed to have anything in the crib and even bumpers are a no-no, but what about these toys?  Also, I do plan on attaching a breathable bumper once she's more mobile so the toys would have to go anyway, right?  Another concern is that she sleeps really well in her crib at night so I don't want her to associate it with playtime.  We don't even have a mobile because the one we have does not attach to her crib since the top slat is so wide.  Lately, she's been giving us 7 to 8 hours in the crib at night and we just put her down with no stimulation at all.  So, I don't want to ruin that with the toys.

What do you think?

Re: crib toys

  • We didn't put toys in Carley's crib until she was a little older. She was slept pretty well and would use the toys in the morning when she would wake up and play quietly in her crib until one of us grabbed her. We use the little mirror and the pink soothe and glow seahorse. If you don't think she needs it, then hold off...but I like the idea of them being able to self soothe or entertain themselves for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, make my bed, prep her bottle, etc.

  • Go, Elise, for giving you such a good stretch of sleep at night! I think it's great she sleeps so well and you have a point about not wanting to stimulate her too much. I'd hold off for now since what you have going on now works so well, but maybe keep them around in case you ever change your mind.

FWIW, all we have in Javy's crib is a projection mobile, and we'll remove the mobile part once he's sitting up. It has different options for music, nature sounds, heartbeat, and lights. We've noticed different combos work at different times, and sometimes Javy does get a little too stimulated if the light, mobile, and music are all on.

I totally agree with this.  However, at the moment what I'm doing is after her morning feeding, I'll place the toy/sound machine in her crib/PNP after her morning feeding while I get ready for the day.  I'm also doing this to get her used to it so I can get ready for work after her morning feeding.

LOL, she's really good at night.  After that stretch, she'll go down for a few more hours after her 4ish a.m. feeding.  Like I wrote in my other post, it's the daytime naps that she has trouble with.  So, maybe I can save those toys for daytime to keep her entertained while she's "resting" in her crib or PNP if she won't fall asleep.
