Birthing Classes

DH and I are expecting in a month.  We've discussed taking lamaze classes but haven't done anything about it.  I don't think that it's completely hit me yet how intense labor is going to be.

Would you suggest taking a class or are they a waste of time?  If you suggest them, any specific place would be great!  Thanks:)

Re: Birthing Classes

  • It's been three years since I last delivered a baby, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I really wished I'd taken a childbirth class during my first pregnancy.  I went into labor naturally but when the time came, I felt very unprepared to deal with the amount of pain I experienced.   I didn't feel I was mentally prepared enough to handle it well.  There's no way of knowing whether a childbirth class would have made a difference, but I've always thought it would have.

I don't know of specific places to take childbirth classes but I'm sure other posters will chime in on that.

I hope your labor and delivery goes smoothly!

  • Thank you!  I am feeling the same way.  I know it's going to hurt, but I am so used to just dealing with things or going with the flow.  I'm thinking this might be just a little different:)
  • I think we will take one along with a breastfeeding class.

I know our hospital offers them . I think for around $75. It's at Womans. I think most of them do actually.

  • We took our childbirthing class a couple weeks ago. I mainly wanted to take it for DH. Like you my DH had no idea how much it took to have a baby. After that class he was completly on board and was glad he knew how the process it worked.

They won't teach you much breathing techniques because most women get epidurals they say so the techniques aren't really needed. I think the class was really beneficial especially if you are first time parent. I know it helped ease my mind and answer some questions I had.

We are taking also a breastfeeding class, infant care & infant CPR.

  • Where did you take the classes?
  • I took mine at St. Luke's in the Woodlands, but all hospitals offer them. I know there are plenty in the Medical Center that are offered. You can check them out on the hospital websites. They offer other classes as well (infant care, cpr, breastfeeding, etc.)

  • I think it all depends on what you hope for out of the birthing experience.

    • If you are wanting to have a natural birth or go as long as possible before getting medication, a birthing class can help you, but I would recommend more of a relaxation and natural labor technique class such as Bradley, Hypnobabies/Hypnobirthing or a Weekend of Relaxation class.
    • If you are wanting the All-American birth with an epidural, a hospital-prep class can help you to know what to expect from your hospital's policies, procedures, and expectations. That way, you are not surprised during the process when x,y,z occurs or is encouraged. But, in most cases, they won't teach much on how to cope effectively with contractions before you can get medication.

Either way, I think, especially for first time moms, that birthing classes can be a great help to prepare families for what to expect and how to cope.
