Washington Babies

For the SAHMs

What is your daily routine like?  How many times a week do you get out of the house?  Bonus points if you have a baby around my little man's age.

I am back home with B in two weeks for good (yay!) and while I felt like we had a pretty good routine going during the first three-ish months when I was home with him, I'm curious how other stay-at-home mommies stay sane.  Thanks!

Re: For the SAHMs

  • Yeah, I bet your so excited to be home.

Now M is in preschool 2 days a week, but we always have to have things planned outside of the house 3or so days. We do playgroup on Fridays, which is fun. I try and do most errands while M is at school, but you dont have the issues of shopping with a preschooler, yet. When he was younger I would do one day of grocery and one day of other errands, so we weren't out too long and he could still have a normal nap routine.

Look into moss (mothers of south snohomish) I have acouple good friends who are in it, and really enjoy it. Great way to meet other local moms.  I found our little group on raisingthem.com, we have been getting together weekly since M was 3months old.

  • I'll give you an idea of what my schedule will be like after a month or so when I'm not pg anymore and can get around.  C has preschool tues/thurs and we will do swimming mon or fri morning.  I will go work out at the club and put the baby in the daycare there on tues/thurs.  Wed is my nanny day so she will stay with C while I take the baby and go run errands and stop at the club to work out.  I'm hoping to be at the club at least 3 days a week maybe 1 morning on the weekends.  Typically we are then home for the day around 2pm because C will go down to nap most of the time and then we are pretty much home for the day.

  • At that stage DD was still really portable so we went out every day.  Sometimes a short walk to the store or stop by the library, other times to mom and baby yoga or a playgroup.  Now I have an almost 3 yr old that I watch four days a week, so the schedule is:
Mon-Run at Greenlake at 8:30, home for nap, storytime or playgroup with DD in the PM.
Tues-Grocery shop or other early errand/clean the house, pickup 2 yo at preschool at 11:15, home for lunch, then somewhere fun like the zoo.
Wed-Run, home for nap, lunch then activity with both kids.
    Thurs-Similar to Tues
Fri-Like Wed but we usually go to Spanish storytime at the library.
The 2yo leaves at 4:15 and then DD has another nap if she hasn't taken one earlier in the PM.  DH gets home at 5, eat at 6, start bedtime routine at 7.
  • I'm a SAHM but watch 2 other children during the day. The days DH has off during the week M and I get out of the house. You can go nuts being locked up all day.

  • I never got to be a SAHM of one but I'll give you an idea of what it's like with two. We stay home a lot. I'm not a huge fan of lots of organized activities and DD doesn't really like big groups and also because I have to stick to a fairly strict nap schedule with DD#2. We do try to go out at least a couple days a week to the library or a play date.

Most days DD#1 spends the morning doing some type of pretend play and DD#2 plays in her highchair in the kitchen while I do breakfast. If we're going to go out this is when we usually go. After #2 goes down for a nap #1 and I do a craft project or read books or she helps me do laundry.

After lunch with try to do something outside because I like them to have a least an hour of outdoor time every day. If the weather is really ugly we'll play a game or some type of structured activity in the house. Then late afternoon is naptime for #2 again and that's the start of our quiet time of day. We read books, watch a movie if #1 really needs to wind down.

They both have another burst of energy right before dinner when Daddy gets home so #1 usually runs around while #2 plays in the jumperoo.

In between all of that I clean, cook, nurse and change diapers. When all else fails and I think I'm about to lose my mind we leave the house, even if it's just to go get the mail. Hmm...I never feel like we have much of a routine but after writing it down I guess we do.

  • I have a baby the same age, plus 2 older kids.

If I have an errand to do, I get up 7ish, feed the kids & myself and try to get out the door by 8:30 so we are home for lunch/naps around 11am.  Once a week we take older siblings to swim lessons, and another day to dance. In the spring I plan to add a music class to that for the benefit of all 3 kids. I make dinner when I can, which sometimes is 10am, and other times 4pm (but I try to do no later than that, because life happens). Some where in the day I get 1 load of laundry washed & dried and try to fold laundry while DH reads the 3 a story at bedtime. If he works late, folding gets put off.

I recommend get involved in a moms group, so you have other moms to talk to at least 2 times a month (cause husbands really don't care how hard your days are) and look into one parent/tot class you can start in the spring.

  • Congrats!

I try to get out everyday, even if we just got get groceries or diapers. When Ollie was about 5 or 6 months I started having gtg's a lot at my house with other moms from the bump, or we would meet at the park and walk, have lunch together at someone's house etc. It was so nice and easy since we just had one baby and were all sahms.  We would also go to the storytime at the library once a week. At that age, I just felt like we were all just in our seperate houses feeling kinda lonely and not sure how to pass the time all day, so we would jut gtg and pass the time together,  nothing fancy :)

I also started my Etsy site when ds was 3 months, and it was awesome to have that creative outlet and keep my brain going.

  • We try to get out at least once a day even if it is just to go for a walk to stop at the store to pick up a few things. Generally we get up and eat breakfast. I put N in the Jumperoo while I get ready then we do an outing so that we can be back home around 11 for a feeding and nap time. I try to get my house stuff done while he naps then in the afternoon we play around the house until DH gets home then I become 2nd choice. :)

For us it is helpful to have set days that we do things. There are infant story times at the local library so we do that, we also do the parent baby groups at Evergreen Hospital which are awesome. (Tons of moms with babies in your age group) On Fridays we typically have a playdate with some of the babies from the Parent Baby class. For me it helps to know where we are going on each day. Congrats on staying home!

  • With Mia, I was getting out 4-5 days a week.  We had little gym, play dates, or just to the park, mall or to run errands.

Now with 2, it's a bit harder.  I try to get out 3-4 days a week.  We're a part of 2 play groups so we do each one time a week, little gym, or go to the park.  Luckily it's sunny out pretty much every day and usually warm so it's easy to get out and do things now that Audrey is sleeping through the night and I'm not exhausted.
