My daughter was 7 lbs 20 inches and she just outgrew her newborn stuff. I say just because she still fits into it them if she has a disposable diaper on but we CD so she is wearing 0-3 because of her bubble butt. She could probably wear them for another week or two. She was 8 lbs 13 oz and 21 1/4 inches on Friday.
I thought I was going to have a big baby and so we didn't have any newborn stuff. I'd suggest at least having a 5 or 6 footie pjs on hand even if you don't wash them until your baby is born. Also, she pretty much lived in those side snap long sleeve shirts.
We bought a 0-3 outfit for DS to come home in, but he was swimming in it even at 8 pounds 12 ounces. He wore newborn clothes and diapers for the first 3 weeks or so, then 0-3 and size 1 diapers for the next 5 weeks. He's about 12 pounds now at 9 weeks and is just transitioning into size 2 diapers and 3-6 month clothes. His problem is that his feet are too long for the 0-3 clothes -- well, the ones with feet anyway :-)
V was 7 lbs 15.5 oz at birth (then lost 10 oz but was back to her birth weight within two weeks) She was 20.5 inches long (Now she is 11lbs 12oz and 23 inches long) She is now wearing 0-3 but was in NB clothing for at least 4 weeks. She is 11 weeks on the dot today.
Adia was 5 lbs 15oz and is still wearing NB clothes. We go in on Wednesday for her 2 month visit so I don't know her current stats. I would recommend having some NB clothes on hand.
My little guy was born at 7lb 15oz, long and skinny. We are just now retiring some NB outfits (the cotton sleepers.. he still fits in the fleece ones). He fits length-wise into 3 month outfits but they are massively baggy on him. And we are just now starting the transition to size 1 diapers at almost 7 weeks.
ETA: we loved the side snap t-shirts to go under his sleepers. They have been awesome for nighttime diaper changes. Much quicker than a onesie.

DD1 was 6lbs.10oz. 19.5" long and fit into preemie stuff for the first few weeks (til about 7lbs), then NB stuff until about 2.5 months (9.5lbs) and was fully in 3 month stuff by 3 months (11lbs.)
DD2 was 7lbs. 15oz. 18.5" long and actually fit best into the preemie stuff for the first week or two (she dropped to 7lbs for a bit) and is still mostly in NB at 2 months (and 10lbs.) but we're starting to put her in more 3 month things (like onesies).
DD was born at 6 lbs 4.8 oz and was 20 inches long and still is mostly in newborn stuff. She fits kind of in a few 0-3 outfits but that is mostly sleepers since she is becoming too long for the newborn ones. But most of her clothes she wore early on actually really fit her now or are at least relatively close (some are baggy due to the fact that she is a bean pole and may remain a bean poll for life).
my DD was 7lbs 4oz ans 21inches and she still wears most of her NB clothes as she still isn't even 10lbs. Some 0-3 stuff works because she's so long but baggy since she's so skinny. If you buy NB things keep the tags on most until you see how big he is.
my baby was 7 lbs 10 oz and 20.5 inches at birth. he didnt wear any "clothes, clothes" for almost the first two weeks because he was in the nicu. when he left the nicu he was 8 something. newborn clothes was still big on him. we moved him on up to 0-3 last week. he'll be 8 weeks on wednesday.
My advice: buy newborn size clothes (and diapers). Everyone told me I wouldn't use them and to just start with 0-3 and size 1 diapers.
My daughter was 8 pounds even and birth. She wore NB for 6 weeks. I still have a handful of NB stuff that fits her and she's about 11.5 pounds. She fits into about 1/2 of her 0-3 stuff now (the sizes vary a ton between brands).
This exactly! DD was measuring big on ultrasounds and wound up being 8 lbs 7 oz. when she was born. I only had a few NB outfits on hand, and wound up having to buy some sleepers and stuff because she was swimming in the 0-3 month. Now she's in size 1 diapers (has been since she was about 3-4 weeks old) and wearing more of her 0-3 month outfits. However, most of her NB clothes still fit...especially the ones from Carter's. I think she's about 9.5 lbs right now (not sure)...

DS2 was 7lbs 5 oz 19 inches and is still in NB clothes at 3 weeks. I tried a few0-3 outfits on him on Friday before getting pictures done and he was swimming in some of them.
DS1 was 7lbs 9oz 21 inches and wore NB size for a little over a week. most of the NB size we had bought for him had the rags on them when I pulled them out for this LO.
I would recommend having NB clothes on hand but leaving the tags on most of them if you would want to return them if you won't need them.
DD was 9.5 at birth and 21.5" long. (she dropped to 8 lbs 10 oz before we left the hsopital). She wore NB clothes for the first 3 weeks. It depends on the brand.

Niether. LO was 18 inches, 5lb, 4oz at birth (now about 5lb, 8oz) and she is SWIMMING in newborn clothes. Her little legs don't even stay in the legs. When I unbutton the crotch snaps, her little feet pop out.
Lilly was 5lb 1 oz and we were shocked. Niether NB or 0-3 fit her. We had to go out immediatly and get preemie. Thankfully she had been in NB since week 4. She weighs 9 lbs right now and still is in NB.

I would definitely have NB on hand. My DD was in preemie clothes for about 6 weeks, and is still in NB clothes( shes now 7lbs 5 oz 19 1/2 in.....but she was born early at 3 lbs 9 oz./17 in. If you think you will have a very big baby you could just keep them unwashed with the tags on. HTH

DS weighed 8 lbs even when he was born. We was in newborn clothes for the first month. He was then in 0-3 month stuff for only a few weeks and is now in 3-6 month clothes because he is very long.

Gerber clothes run small, FYI.
LO was 8 pounds 4 oz when he was born and he fit into newborn stuff for the first couple of weeks. He also fit into 0-3 month sleep and plays.
I think we had maybe 6 things in that size and we just washed them and rotated them.
We didn't really do much for outfits until he was about a month old, he was mostly in sleepers 24/7.
