Drowsy but awake doesn't work for us

If my LO falls asleep at the boob, she's fine.  We can lay her down in her bed and she's stays asleep.  When we try to do "drowsy but awake" she screams when we put her down and won't go to sleep.  She never just dozes off.  How do you do "drowsy but awake"?

I should add that LO STTN pretty much (gets up once to eat) so staying asleep isn't really the problem.  It's getting her to go down when I know she's tired. She fights sleep!!

  • Pacifier. Swaddled. And we really started at almost asleep and backed off to drowsy but awake. If she starts fussing when we put her down we lightly rest our hand on her chest and shhhhh.

  • It took multiple nights of being very persistent, plus I think he was kind of ready.  Now I can plop him in the crib and walk away and he goes right to sleep on his own.

  • When you were persistent, do you mean you let LO scream?  When he did, did you pick him up and soothe him then put him back down?

  • I didn't have to resort to CIO, but I probably would have if he didn't catch on quickly.  I kept putting him down awake and I didn't go back in unless he was really crying...not just fussing.  It usually took several tries but within a week as long as he was sleepy it worked, and now I can put him down still wide-eyed and he'll just roll around or "talk" to the seahorse until he falls asleep.

  • Also...that's just for bedtime.  I still have to rock him until he's fairly drowsy to put him down for a nap during the day.
