Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Going back to work.

Hey ladies,

I have to go back to work full time starting Weds. I am so nervous, anxious, scared, relieved... I am a huge ball of emotions. I pump, so I am worried my supply will take a bigger hit than it did with the return of AF. I work 3 nights a week (not in a row), and should be able to pump at least 3 times a night. I will leave my house at 6:30pm and get home by 9am.My mom will watch DS in the day while I sleep.

I guess my solace is that if any milestones happen, she can just run and wake me up.  I have enjoyed all of my time home with my baby, but at the same time I miss my friends from work. Just needed to ask, how has everyone's transition to work been?

Re: Going back to work.

  • It was rough the first couple of days. I felt like I didn't get to see DS, and I was so afraid he was going to start something new while I was away, but it's gotten a lot better. Its like to be out and to feel like I am contributing to the family again.

I pump also, and my supply took a hit, but not as badly as I thought. I just had to dip into my freezer stash yesterday while he stayed with my mom, and I have been back to work for 2 weeks now. On my days off, I am able to catch back up though. GL!

  • I went back last week and didn't think it was that bad.  But, I knew I was only working for 5 days and then would have the next two weeks off (I'm a teacher and we're on holiday break now) and I also knew he was with family.  When I go back in January, he will be in day care 4 days a week and I think it will be harder.  I made a picture collage that I took to work for my room and it makes me smile to look over there at him.  It was hard for me to come home at the end of the day and be exhausted and know that DS would be going through the hardest part of his day (the evening) when he's more cranky.
  • I am going back on Tuesday.  I work from home so my LO will be in the next room with my mom.  I will still be able to nurse her a play a little throughout the day.  I am worried I will be distracted and not get enought work done.  I am lucky to have this situation, but I do have to travel some for my job.  I have to be gone on Jan. 6 and she will be with my DH but I am freaking out about leaving her.  I will be gone from like 5 am until midnight.  I am taking an early flight so I won't be gone over night.  I will have to figure out how to pump while traveling.

  • I worked from home for a few weeks and then started back full time last week. Working from home was hard because I spent so much time attending to LO that I ended up working much longer hours. Also, the time I did spend with him while trying to get work done felt rushed and I had a million other things on my mind so I always felt guilty.

Now that I'm back in the office, at least the time I do spend with him is much more quality time and he gets my full attention. It's been really hard on me being gone all day, but I know the baby is in good hands. We have a great sitter, but i'm still sad that I'm not there with my son throughout the day. I definitely tear up a little at least once a day over it. Hopefully it will get easier soon!!!

     Good luck!
