Working Out?

I'm about 3 weeks pp and feeling pretty good. I had a few first-degree labial tears, and the stitches are still there. I want to start working out. I figure I probably shouldn't run or anything too strenuous, but what about some crunches and back/arm work (lifting 10 lb weights)? Think it's too soon?

Re: Working Out?

  • My vote is to take it easy at least for the first 6 weeks... You will miss taking it easy soon enough :)

  • Are you still bleeding or having brown discharge? Then yes, it's too soon. Play it safe and wait until your 6-week post pardum check up. I understand that you want to get back into it (I'm a personal trainer and wanted to start getting back into it, too), but do yourself a favor and let yourself fully heal.
  • Even though I felt really good 2 weeks PP, I was told absolutely no crunches until 6 weeks.

  • You need to wait until your doctor clears you. If you really need to work out I would call her office and ask what they think, until then I'd just stick to walking and taking it easy. If you push it too soon you could really do yourself much more harm than good.

  • I vote wait - especially until your stitches heal. I read that you should definitely hold off on crunches until you can feel any ab tears have re-fused near your sternum. I felt mine fuse sometime around 6-7 weeks.
  • The ONLY thing you can probably do safely is an arm workout, but it would have to be REALLY light.

Even though you feel healed on the outside, your body is recovering from a MAJOR event on the inside. Doing exercise can kick-start bleeding.

  • Thanks. I'm sure you ladies are all right, so I'll keep waiting it out. I just get so restless. . . it'll be nice to be able to move again!
