Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Gassy LO?

I am EBF and seem to have a really gassy baby. Just this past week he has gone from content to all of a sudden screaming until he passes gas or poops. Then he's okay, but repeat until the final poop is done.

I did give him some Mylicon drops (pedi approved) but it doesn't seem like I should be giving them with every meal- though I am going to call the office tomorrow to talk to them about it.

Nothing has changed in my diet in the past week- does anyone else have a gassy baby? Or some words of wisdom?

TIA!

Re: Gassy LO?

  • My DS has severe gas.  My ped says all babies have gas.  Yeah but I do not think all babies scream with gas or until they poop.  What I have found that works for us, we bicycle the legs after his feedings and during playtime, I lay with him on the couch so I am on my right side and he is on his left facing me.  When he is on his left side he passes gas.  Also, I have to make sure he burps.  if he does not burp during and after a feeding I know we will suffer.

  • Now see, there are times I can't get L to burp.  I try different positions, different smacking rhythms, gentle bouncing, hard rubbing, bicycling,  etc.  I will try for a bit and then move on.  I always feel bad if he burps later, but to me, it seems worse to keep smacking on him after a point.

He's the single greatest thing I've done in my life and reminds me daily of how fun (and funny) life can be.  He's turned out pretty swell for having such a heartless and evil mother.
  • Our kid has about the most horrible gas i have ever smelt. He does get uncomfortable sometimes, to the point of crying. We tried gas drops but they dont seem to do anything, we also asked our dr about them and he said they dont really do anything but make the company that produced them money. We've tried gripe water and that seems to work a little better. I've been breast feeding and using formula, we switched to similac for sensitive stomachs a few days ago and things seem to be looking up for the time being.  Bicycle the legs for a little while and he's a happier baby..sometimes i dont even get the knees up to his belly before hes letting loose. It does suck to have a gassy baby that has a hard time pooping, i wish there was more to do to help the lilttle fella.

  • I'm so glad I popped onto TB for a little bit to see this post.  LO doubles over and screams from the gas pain, sometimes for hours at a time.  I'm sorry it's happening to your LOs too, but on some level I'm relieved to know we're not the only ones.  I hadn't thought to bicycle the legs.  Thanks for the tip. . . . .
