How did you tell your students? I still haven't told mine, HA! I am almost 20 weeks and have a bump but I guess they don't really notice and it's been a gradual change. I would like to tell them before we leave for break, but it's so awkward, they are elementary school.

Re: Teachers
Read them a story about a baby or something and that can be your lead in... Even about a brother or a sister and then talk to them about who has brothers/sisters ... and then you can tell them that you will be having a baby... in ? ask who is born that month and you can even mention that the baby will be born close to Easter...(right?)
That's awesome!!
HA, cute!
My kids are too young to get that, ha!
Thanks for the ideas girls.
I teach 2nd grade and I played hangman with them. I told them there was a surpise message on the board and let them figure it out. I put "Mrs Bartow is having a baby", it took them awhile, but they got it.

This. Don't you love second grade!?? I'm going to tell after the break
Good luck!
I haven't decided how I'm going to do it yet. I'll be 17 weeks on Thursday, our last day before vacation. They're definitely on to me (I have 6th-8th graders) - but somewhere along the line someone must have told them it's rude to ask a woman if she's pregnant! Over the past 2 weeks I've really started to show, so I've got to say something soon.
I'm trying to decide if I'll tell them the day before break, or the day we get back. I love the counting the people in the room idea - and hangman - great ideas!
I looped up with my kids from 2nd to 3rd, so we are ultra close! I sent them on a scaevenger hunt around the classroom. Each clue led to a place in the room where a word was located. They worked in teams to find all of the words and put them into a sentence that said, "Mrs. Burns is having a baby!"
It was awesome, their reactions were priceless. I told them right before Thanksgiving break

Wow, you guys are so much more creative than I am!! I just told my 2nd graders that I had a surprise.... that I was going to have a baby in June. Their faces were priceless. They were half smiling, half confused, and a little horrified!! Finally my TA prompted them with the "what do you say?" Then I got a big congratulations. We were only in school for 1/2 day after that. I have gotten a few questions, mostly like "Can I bring ______ for your baby?" One boy very seriously asked me "Who is the baby by?"
My hope was that telling them before break would make it old news once we get back. They don't need any extra distractions!
I work in a high school, which is quite different, but I just came out and told the kids I coach. The screaming and hollering was unprecedented! Best response ever and it totally took me by surprise. You would have thought they were on an episode of Oprah's Favorite Things the way they carried on in excitement.

I teach SPED resource room, too (elementary). I told my 5th graders almost right away because I had a possible complication and wanted to let them know that I might be absent every couple of weeks for a doctor appointment. They were really excited, even though I'm a new teacher in their school. A lot of them have nieces/nephews or younger siblings so they were really great about it.
Haven't figured out how to tell the 3rd and 4th graders though...I mostly teach them inclusively, but I'd feel really weird announcing it to their homeroom classes...

LOL just read your post. This is exactly what I did too!

I read this with DD#1, and still have the same students from 2 years ago- I teach special ed in elementary school. I think this time I will use hangman.

My MARRIED Bio
I told my kindergartners a couple of weeks ago - I waited until after Thanksgiving. When we were sitting down I just told them I had exciting news and that I Was having a baby in May- being 5 and 6, the conversation quickly steered towards their own birthday, but they were excited. They are now helping me think of names, but I have to say, that of course most of them have forgotten! I remind them from time to time by saying something about the baby in my tummy - and they get that look like "oh yeah!". The best was that after I told them some went home and told their parents, and said that I was going to bring the baby in the following Monday...
I told my kindergarten kiddos pretty early. With the IVF, blood tests and multiple u/s, I had to miss a lot of school and they were concerned. I told them after we heard the heartbeat for the second time.
They had lots of questions (all very cute) and are always concerned for me and the baby.
I wish I had done it a cuter way. I just told them I had a secret I wanted to share and gave them hints about it all week until they guessed it on Friday. The easy thing about teaching kinder is that they all always think your pregnant even when you are not.

This! I read this story to my 2nd graders 3 weeks ago when I felt like I couldn't really hide my bump too much longer. I started by reading the title and one of the little boys said, "Is our teacher going to have a baby?" and I said "yes, you're teacher IS going to have a baby." haha They were so cute. Since I have a read aloud every day, I thought most of them may not get it, but they all figured it out. I loved at the end of the story when they all wanted to tell me about people they knew who were having babies. It's a fun way to share that you're pregnant with the little kids!
