2nd Trimester

Teachers

How did you tell your students? I still haven't told mine, HA! I am almost 20 weeks and have a bump but I guess they don't really notice and it's been a gradual change.  I would like to tell them before we leave for  break, but it's so awkward, they are elementary school.

Re: Teachers

  • Read them a story about a baby or something and that can be your lead in... Even about a brother or a sister and then talk to them about who has brothers/sisters ... and then you can tell them that you will be having a baby... in ?  ask who is born that month and you can even mention that the baby will be born close to Easter...(right?)

  • I told my second graders by reading them a book - Arthur's Baby. I asked them why they thought I was reading that one and a few kids shot their hands right up. Turned out that there were a number of them who had heard this story as the announcement for their little sibling.

  • I teach grade 8 and I asked them how many people were in the room.  They kept responding and I kept saying "count again, you're wrong!".  They clued in pretty quickly.  It was funny.

    HA, cute!

My kids are too young to get that, ha!

    Thanks for the ideas girls.

  • I teach 2nd grade and I played hangman with them.  I told them there was a surpise message on the board and let them  figure it out.  I put "Mrs Bartow is having a baby", it took them awhile, but they got it.

  • I haven't decided how I'm going to do it yet. I'll be 17 weeks on Thursday, our last day before vacation. They're definitely on to me (I have 6th-8th graders) - but somewhere along the line someone must have told them it's rude to ask a woman if she's pregnant! Over the past 2 weeks I've really started to show, so I've got to say something soon.

I'm trying to decide if I'll tell them the day before break, or the day we get back. I love the counting the people in the room idea - and hangman - great ideas!

  • I looped up with my kids from 2nd to 3rd, so we are ultra close! I sent them on a scaevenger hunt around the classroom. Each clue led to a place in the room where a word was located. They worked in teams to find all of the words and put them into a sentence that said, "Mrs. Burns is having a baby!"

It was awesome, their reactions were priceless. I told them right before Thanksgiving break :)

  • I teach elementary special education - resource room.     I've been kind of hoping they didn't notice my bump.   I planned on telling them I ate too many Christmas cookies.    A few have heard from their parents though and shared with the rest of the groups.
But three things remain: faith, hope and love; the greatest of these is love. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker BabyFruit Ticker
  • I played hangman with my 5th graders to tell them.  Mrs. _ is expecting a baby in April!  They loved it.

  • I teach first grade and I read my students a book called "Our Teacher's Having a Baby."  At the end, I asked them why they thought I would choose to read that book to them.  It took a few tries, but they finally figured it out!

  • Wow, you guys are so much more creative than I am!! I just told my 2nd graders that I had a surprise.... that I was going to have a baby in June. Their faces were priceless. They were half smiling, half confused, and a little horrified!! Finally my TA prompted them with the "what do you say?" Then I got a big congratulations. We were only in school for 1/2 day after that. I have gotten a few questions, mostly like "Can I bring ______ for your baby?" One boy very seriously asked me "Who is the baby by?"

My hope was that telling them before break would make it old news once we get back. They don't need any extra distractions!

  • I work in a high school, which is quite different, but I just came out and told the kids I coach.  The screaming and hollering was unprecedented! Best response ever and it totally took me by surprise. You would have thought they were on an episode of Oprah's Favorite Things the way they carried on in excitement.

  • I told my students that run our news program in the morning since I see them every day. They're MS students so it's a little easier. The rest are just figuring it out on their own. I get a lot of awkward questions about it!

  • I teach SPED resource room, too (elementary).  I told my 5th graders almost right away because I had a possible complication and wanted to let them know that I might be absent every couple of weeks for a doctor appointment.  They were really excited, even though I'm a new teacher in their school.  A lot of them have nieces/nephews or younger siblings so they were really great about it.

Haven't figured out how to tell the 3rd and 4th graders though...I mostly teach them inclusively, but I'd feel really weird announcing it to their homeroom classes...

  • I have middle school students & I told my 8th graders last Thursday (the day before our "Fun Day" & 2 weeks of break). We have a short OAA practice period each day & since it was a short week we didn't do anything during that 20 minute period. I decided to play hangman with them, which they like doing. My sentence for them said "Mrs. Garrett is having a baby." It was funny because they kept thinking it said baking & then some of them thought they knew what it said but were too embarrassed to guess it. LOL They were very happy for me though & were asking me all kinds of questions.

LOL just read your post. This is exactly what I did too!

  • I teach 4th grade, and I told them by playing hangman - "Mrs. _____ is having a baby!" They were so cute when they figured it out!  I have friends who've used read alouds, and one friend who kept putting it off until she just sat them down after lunch and said, "OK - I have news.  I'm having a baby!"

I read this with DD#1, and still have the same students from 2 years ago- I teach special ed in elementary school.  I think this time I will use hangman.

  • I teach Kindergarten... I had the parents tell the kids (in case awkward questions came up)... then the next day we talked about it b/c they were all whispering about it. Then I have kept them involved with things like finding out the sex.. they have been cute! :)
  • I haven't told mine at all (I am almost 23 weeks), but mine are 18-20 years old.  I think they are starting to figure it out, I'll definately tell them next semester, since I'll be leaving before the end of the semester.

  • I teach K-5 music and I told them by playing the telephone game.  They loved it.  It was really cool to see each kids face as they heard the secret and most of the time it was still the same secret at the end.
  • At 14 weeks the kids came up to me and asked me because one of the teachers had the balls to tell them, and to even tell them how far along I was. Way to ruin the surprise, lady.
  • I told my kindergartners a couple of weeks ago - I waited until after Thanksgiving.  When we were sitting down I just told them I had exciting news and that I Was having a baby in May- being 5 and 6, the conversation quickly steered towards their own birthday, but they were excited.  They are now helping me think of names, but I have to say, that of course most of them have forgotten!  I remind them from time to time by saying something about the baby in my tummy - and they get that look like "oh yeah!".  The best was that after I told them some went home and told their parents, and said that I was going to bring the baby in the following Monday...

  • I told my kindergarten kiddos pretty early.  With the IVF, blood tests and multiple u/s, I had to miss a lot of school and they were concerned.  I told them after we heard the heartbeat for the second time.

They had lots of questions (all very cute) and are always concerned for me and the baby.

I wish I had done it a cuter way.  I just told them I had a secret I wanted to share and gave them hints about it all week until they guessed it on Friday. The easy thing about teaching kinder is that they all always think your pregnant even when you are not.

This! I read this story to my 2nd graders 3 weeks ago when I felt like I couldn't really hide my bump too much longer. I started by reading the title and one of the little boys said, "Is our teacher going to have a baby?" and I said "yes, you're teacher IS going to have a baby." haha They were so cute. Since I have a read aloud every day, I thought most of them may not get it, but they all figured it out. I loved at the end of the story when they all wanted to tell me about people they knew who were having babies. It's a fun way to share that you're pregnant with the little kids!

  • I teach 1st grade. We have show and tell every Wednesday, so I brought in one of my ultrasound pictures, and showed them it and asked them if they knew what it was, and why I brought it. One of my students knew what the picture was because her mom is pregnant too. They were all excited, and now they keep asking me if they will get to see the baby, because I am due right after school is out in May. Oh and one of my students was worried about who would be taking care of the baby while I am at work...lol. 1st graders are hilarious. ;)

  • Mine is similar to the hangman, but I turned it into a scavenger hunt all over our school.  I gave teams a map with different locations on it (each location was a letter in the message).  The message spelt that I was having a baby.  they LOVED it, parents did too.

  • I'm a sixth grade English teacher. Every day when the students come in, they have to respond to a writing prompt. At sixteen weeks (last week) when they came in the writing prompt read "Share something you haven't told many people." I always let them share afterward and kids talked about having learning disabilities and different fears. Then I came out and told them I had something to share with them: that I was pregnant and expecting my second baby in June!! It went really well.
