I know basically nothing about what a baby needs. Can anyone direct me to a good list/site that can help me get started? We want to be pretty minimal, but like said, I don't know much.

Re: "must have" baby checklist?
Baby Bargains is an awesome book.
ETA: They have lists of necessary items. They grade different brands in each category (cribs, carriers, diaper bags, etc.). They aren't funded by anyone who would make their research bias. The writing style is easy to read. It's definitely worth the $12 from Amazon.

not so much nursery, since I know crib, changing table or pad, and dresser will pretty much cover it.
But anything you have would be great.
I am starting to feel a little freaked. I've been around a lot of babies, but not for a long time. I feel like I am going to fail.

I know how you feel. I'm feeling this same way. I do not know what to even think about registering for.
Baby monitor, bottles, sterilizer, carriage/stroller, car seat, carrier/sling. ( and breast pump if breast feeding), baby toiletries
Clothes:
3-6 cotton footies
2-4 tshirt cotton onsies
2-4 long sleeve cotton onsies
2-4 cotton t shirt
2-4 cotton long sleeve tshirts
1-2 two-piece outfits
1 cardigan
4-6 pairs of socks
2 pairs of slip on booties
2 washable bibs
1 hat
I know this doesn't cover everything. But the amounts seemed to help bc I know I can easily go overboard esp with cute baby stuff.
Baby Bathtub too!
If you're not sure about what to register for. I would ask the store. I know when you print one out to shop for, each item is listed by category, Feeding, Clothing, etc. So maybe looking at the list may help you to organize what you will need for: bath time (towel, soaps, tub...), sleep time(pjs, monitor, blankie...), meal time (bottles, formula, formula containers, ice packs, pump, bottles, breast milk storage...) etc...
I was talking to DH about all this baby stuff and his response was HILARIOUS. I told him baby shampoo/soap etc. He was like what? Why can't they use our shampoo, they don't even have that much hair? Then... I told him about the baby bath tub and he seems to think this is the stupidest idea ever. He says - why do they need their own bathtub? We're going to be holding them the whole time?!?
Oh, we have a lot of adventures ahead....

Do you need a sterilizer if you have a dishwasher? I don't understand the point of it.
I am a baby idiot.

When/if you register you can get a nice list of items to get. But every baby is different and you might not need everything on the list or like everything.
We never used/needed:
dishwasher basket, bottle drying rack, sterilizer, bottle warmer, wipes warmer, burp clothes (literally, maybe used them one time- DS never spit up), diaper pail (we cloth diaper), changing table, bumbo
We used/loved:
Sarabear diaper caddy (portable), gripe water, Bornfree bottles (when not breastfeeding), pump, bottle scrub brush (with mini brush on the end), swaddle blanket (with velcro), kimono style tops, sleep sacks, sleepers with zippers, caps
Also, just an fyi, a lot of babies hate bathtime- our DS screamed bloody murder so we stopped using the baby bathtub and put him in the bathtub with me- it was lovely, warm bonding time and he'd nurse during it. After about two months we tried the bathtub again and he loved it then!
You'll find out what works for you!

I just have to say if your baby is a puker or a pooper this wont be nearly enough clothing. I went through easily 3-4 outfits a day some days because of a blowout from either end.
We also have dozens of burp cloths because my kids spit up alot. Swaddling blankets several of those are good in case of a leak. My swing & bouncy seat saved my sanity because they both wanted to held alot & especially with #2 that wasnt realistic. Pacifiers if you'll go that route (its effective in preventing sids) couple different kinds in case baby doesnt like one. Sunshade for the car window because itll be summer time. I know theres more but Im sleepy & my brains not working.
I'm having the same problem - I know NOTHING about babies and now I've got 2 on the way. I REALLY wish I had a friend or someone to go to BRU with me to show me what to get. The BRU checklist is all fine and good, but I wish I had some personal knowledge of what you need and what's pointless.
But unfortunately I'm the first of my friends to have a baby and in terms of family, the last baby we've had was my cousins kid who is now 10 years old.
One of DH's friends just had a baby though - I don't know his wife that well, but I wonder if she'd be up for going with me. I'm grasping at straws.
After 2 years, Injects, PCOS diagnosis and 2 IUI's, we were blessed with our beautiful twin girls!

No, I dont have a dish washer & I still dont have a sterilizer. If you have the slightest clue how to wash dishes you will be fine.
Honestly if you are a minimalist than I wouldn't waste your money on baby bargins. It is a good book but I found when I got it from a friend that half the products were things that I never even used. Also I think I found that WM's and SAHM's use different products. I am a WM so I can only speak for the time I am home after work. DD went to DC at 4 months this baby at probably 2 months.
For the first few month my DD lived in onsies and I would put on little pants/shorts and socks if we went out (she was an April baby and it is warm here). T shirts would ride up and make me annoyed when taking her places. In the beginning bibs were not necessary for us. She was bf and didn't spit up really ever (I know I was lucky) but honestly my friends that needed them needed like 15 to make it a week without doing laundry daily and they bought bigger ones. Also many outfits just come with them. So you may want to see what kind of kid you have. And jammies. That was my clothing need for a really long time.
Items for around the house the bouncer was a blessing. I would put her in when I showered because i could carry it and put it outside the shower and watch her while I showered. I could put her in it while I just the bathroom (nothing is more difficult than a screaming child and trying to go hehe). I also used it when we went to a friends house to hang out etc because she would nap it in or sleep if we went later in the evening. Many good uses. The swing is nice but I didn't use it as often. The jumperoo was nice but she was in DC so by that time she didn't use it as often. Playmat really was a waste a blanket with a fun pattern and a bunch of toys around her make her happier and most playmats encourage the child to lay on their back because they have things up instead of down. PNP I used as a bassinet and then later as a travel crib. Travel system was nice and easy for getting around but after she was out of the bucket carseat it was annoying to lug the lg stroller around.
I did have a sterilizer, dishwasher baskets. bottle warmer, and bottle brush. Honestly it was so cheap and sometimes I needed to sterilize bottles and the dishwasher wasn't full enough to run so that is when it came in handy. With her going to DC the pedi recommended sterilizing to make sure they were extra clean. But I didn't double do it. It was annoying to have it on the counter but after a while I found that I would pull it out and put it away. I had many more lg bottles than I did small and later they don't drink as many so it was really short lived.
Baby bath tub is good I have one that converts infant to toddler just the basic FP and it was great. Diaper bags annoy me and still do it is hard to find a good one that isn't to bulky or too small so I can't help with that one. I bf and work so I got a medela double pump much quicker, 2 sets of parts, medela wipes so I could clean without water and reuse during the day, and extra bottles to bring back and forth to work and some she would drink out of (the pump came with a cooler etc). BM storage bags and Breast pads. A hooter hider or similar a blanket is fine in the beginning and then they will start to pull.
I was gifted a million receiving blankets and really a few of those and the bigger swaddling blankets are better. Also we use the sleep sacks later.
I am sure there are a ton more things I am not thinking about and this is honestly just my opinion. Take a trip to BRU and look at everything you will start to see what you think you will and won't use. Also if you wish you had gotten it later you can always go out and get it.

i just put some water in a pot and boiled everything for 10 or 15 mins...it may take a bit longer but it's a bit cheaper (we are on a SUPER tight budget
) so far as dishwashers go, the things are so smal and sooo light weight it's really easy for them to just sort of fly around the dishwasher then u run the ris of it melting or getting burned on the heating coil in the bottom. we boiled everything for our daughter and will do the same this time around

a friend of mine with two girls swears all she needed the first three months was a pack and play (when it comes to big items). the baby wasn't in it's crib until it was about 4 months old. the pack and play was in the parents room with the baby at night then they just took it out into the living room during the day.
Haha- You really don't need the bathtub- we used ours once and DD shivered her cute little butt off and hated every minute of it! And I had registered for the "Rolls Royce" of Babytubs. The kitchen sink is great as you are at a good height and have much better control over DB...I recommend Aveeno Lavender Baby Wash...the Johnson and Johnson Stuff is so drying that craddle cap is a guarantee. We tried different products because the Aveeno line is fairly expensive but always end up back with it.
Other than that...lots of sleepers/ creepers...they cover the little munchkin from head to toe and are super cute!
