My sister said something about this and confused the crap out of me. Are there certain things that the baby cannot wear until the umbilical cord stump falls off? She made it sound like all onesies were off limits until then.
I think people have different opinions on this. However my godson and his sister were both in onesies right away. Having no personal experience yet that is the best I can offer.

You can put the baby in whatever you want- but, be aware that the stump could bleed a small bit and stain everything that gets worn. I had my son in all white cheapie onesies for the first week until the stump came off and healed, and they were all stained where the umbilical was with a small bit of blood. It's a good thing I didn't use my 'good' onesies!

Hmm maybe I need to rethink bringing all my good onsies!

I found it much easier at first to just use those little white T shirts that snap in the front than onsies. Easier to change a floppy newborn and they don't rub on the cord stump.
The nurse in our infant care class said to avoid onesies b/c if they are too tight on the area LO can develop an infection. She said to use shirt/pant combos until it falls off (though the swaddle/halo blankets are fine since they also more air).
My favorites were those kimono-style shirts. Easy on the stump and easy on/off for a new little baby. You don't have to pull anything over their wobbly heads.
actually you want to make sure that you put onesies on him otherwise the waist band from the pants will rub the cord stump and irritate it. The onesie will keep it in place while it heals.

Our son wore onesies from the get-go. We didn't have any bleeding issues or anything. It's just going to be what you are comfortable with.
I should also add that the onesies were pretty big on him and by no means tight.
