Reflux ?

DS has been taking Zantac for 4 weeks now and things seemed better.  The past few days though he has gone back to spitting up large quantities, hiccuping a lot, coughing/choking, etc.  I'm wondering if because he's gained weight since he started taking it we need to increase the amount he takes.  Did anyone have to increase the medicine?  Or switch types?

Re: Reflux ?

  • You might need to increase the amount. Though I know for DS1, the Zantac never really stopped the amount of spit up, just the discomfort. It sucks! I just posted below how we went through 10+ bibs and burp cloths a day until he was 9 mo old- I'm so hoping this LO doesn't have it!

  • This is exactly what happened to us.  DD was on Zantac for 3 weeks and then suddenly it seemed to stop working.  We called the pedi who had her come in to be weighed.  She had gained more than anticipated so her dose was increased.  We could see the difference that night.
  • Yes, they do need too up the dosage as they gain weight. We were just upped from .6 ml twice a day to .8 ml twice a day and dr. said to call at 3 months and they will increase to 1 ml twice a day.

It is true Zantac is only supposed to make the spit up less acidic, not actually stop it from happening, but for us he went back to super small quantities of spit up and much less frequently. I would call your pedi and ask if its time to up the dosage.

  • Thanks guys!  I plan on calling tomorrow!
