Parenting after 35

about last night

it sucked but i did it. she woke at 230 and was back asleep by 330. i went in and laid her down and told her it was bedtime and i loved her, then left; went back in after 5 mins more and barely said anything; went in after 10 mins more of crying and said nothing (hardest time for me); then after 15 mins more of crying she (thank GOD) let me rub her back and went to sleep.

she was up again at 6 and i went to give her a bottle but she didn't want it- just wanted to be held for a minute. it about killed me. i held her for a couple minutes, laid her down, and she went back to sleep for another hour and a half.

i hate doing this but the fact is she really is getting more than enough nourishment throughout the day and we need to cut out the nighttime bottles- period.

Re: about last night

  • It's hard but it doesn't take long to night-wean if they're waking up out of habit rather than hunger (which according to my pedi happens once they double their birth weight).  I waited until Simon was 8 months to wean him off the 2 a.m. nursing (since he was bf I thought he might be hungry), then at 13 months I weaned him off the 5 a.m. nursing.  Now he sleeps 12 hours and doesn't even want breakfast until an hour after he wakes up (he drinks an 8 oz sippy cup of milk though). Glad you made it through the first night!

  • Wow! Y'all stuck with the middle-of-the-night feed longer than I did. More power to ya! I stripped Betty Jane of her 3:00am feeding at 3 months. Once the pedi said that she really didn't "need" the night feedings anymore, I hopped on that bandwagon and cut the feeding. It was only bad for about 3 nights and then it was pure heaven. Yay sleep!

Good luck with the rest of your journey!

  • Just want to say I'm sorry. It's a bad feeling but you have to do what you need to do. I might be dealing with this later because Thomas is still getting 3oz bottle around 4:30. I'm just glad he's doing 6-7 hour stretches.

  • Good for you.  I am going to have to bite the bullet and do the same thing soon.
