Breastfeeding

gritty/sandy breastmilk

So all 1300+ ozs of my stored frozen BM was in a freezer that died, since it never fully thawed it was 'slushy' I was told I can refreeze it and use it all. Thank god! They said just to smell it before use to make sure it isnt spoiled and to make sure LO isnt getting fussy or runny diapers. So far, so good. But I have noticed in some bags that after I thaw the milk sometimes it seems like there is "sand" in the bottom of the storage bag. I know that the milk will spereate and can be clumpy, but has anyone had experience with having any stored BM with sandy or gritty stuff in it? Just curious. Im going to call the lac nurse on Monday and see what she says but im just curious now.

  • yah. I think its just the clumps of fat and crystallized sugars in the milk. Mine go away after its warmed and shaken.

Just wanted to mention, you shouldn't shake breastmilk. It breaks down the proteins in the milk. You should only swirl the bottle to get the fat reincorporated.
