How much do you pay babysitters?

My sister and I have always traded babysitting services with each other so I have never really had to hire a babysitter for a night out.  Our DD has been performing in the Nutcracker with a local ballet company for the past 3 years.  Its a big deal for her and she gets so excited to have the family come see her.  Since my parents have recently moved, they were unable to come and I didn't want to ask my sister to baby sit our 2 month old instead of coming to the show.  We decided to hire our good friend's/neighbor's niece.  She's 22 and great with babies/kids so I felt really lucky to have her.  She babysat for 6 hours and we paid her $80.00 for the night, so about $13 per hour.  Does that sound right?

  • I think that is more than generous. We have a college girl who charges $6 an hour for evening sitting. So for 3 hours her rate would only be $18, but we would give her $30, b/c her rates are sooo cheap.

  • I think that sounds about right. I would pay 10-15 an hour depending on age and experience. I firmly believe you get what you pay for in most situations. When our kids are older I might be happy to leave them with a teen babysitter but for the moment I'm happy to pay more to someone older for the peace of mind when we go out.
  • WE usually pay $10/hr and buy her dinner as well.
